So the other day when I was test booting for the first time I had a problem with my PSU and it started to smell burnt after my motherboard popped. I have gotten a new MOBO and PSU arriving tomorrow. The thing is, my GPU(MSI R9 290) and CPU fan continued running when it happened but my PSU started to smell burnt. My whole room smelled bad and I can't figure out if my GPU picked up the smell when I packed it back up and its just kinda stuck in the plastic. I know I should probably send it back but I was wondering if you could still use it. I start school Wednesday and want to have it built since I've been waiting for my MOBO for 2 weeks. When I take it out of the package and let it sit out for like 10 minutes it stops smelling. Should I put it in the system and run it and if it starts to smell take it out and send it back? Thank you in advance and please keep it simple this is my first computer so I'm not familiar with all the terms. :)

Send it back immediately. Also send back the RAM, Power Supply and CPU, since they also may have been damaged as well. I know it seems unfair, but you have spent $300+ on building the PC, which is a big commitment, and do you really want to use potentially damaged/ malfunctioning parts that may fail later, after the RMA period and maybe even the warranty has elapsed? Don't take that chance. Send it back , wait a bit, and you will have a computer that is risk-free, unlike if you kept the old parts, where you will probably never know that they were damaged until they stop working.

Ok. I have just requested an RMA to MSI and bought to send one to AMD for my CPU. Should I also do the RAM? I know I am doing the right thing but I'm so mad right now.

Just to be safe, it is better to RMA the RAM and certainly the Power Supply as well.

Thank you very much. I sent everything else back via RMA to everywhere it needs to go. I know it was more of a safety thing but I am happy I am waiting 2-3 weeks rather than frying $750 dollars worth of stuff in my case and being really sad if you know what I mean so thanks again.
