Quick Question - CPU Cooler removal [Amateur]

Hi, My Seidon 120V Liquid cooling pump failed last week, so I have purchased a Hyper 212 Evo air cooler in hope that it cannot fail. Anyway so at the moment I am taking off the Seidon 120V, I have taken the radiator off and need to take the block off the CPU. Do I unscrew the backplate first or do I take the block off the CPU? I was about to try and take the block off when I realised I would be putting a lot of presusre on the CPU with my screwdriver which I assume is not good.

Ok, those screws are crappy.

I would definitely remove everything that around the CPU try unscrewing them very very gently with a pair of pliers or something equivalent, maybe a long socket for a socket wrench that'll fit over the screws. Looks like you should be able to get a good grip. Also, the holes in the middle of the screws, are they by any chance hex-keyhole? (or whatever they're called). That would be the best and easiest way.


But I cannot stress enough how stupidly careful you have to be, scratch the PCB and you could be looking at a new motherboard.

I'd to it in the exact reverse order of how you installed it.

If you are worried stand the chassis up then use pliers to loosen / turn the screws, if they are the sort you can reach. Just mind your PCB

Personally I wouldn't worry about the CPU. The board maybe, if you really put some weight on it.

Hi, On the backplate there are little plastic things which are covering the screws, so I am trying to remove the CPU block securing piller things which go on top of the screws on the side with the CPU, but I cannot do that without using my screwdriver and putting lots of tension on the CPU. I can't finger undo them.

Hey, thanks for your help! I found a flat head screwdriver and that worked so I now have the block off.

Actually quick question, I am now going to install the Hyper 212, Can I leave the old backplate on there? As the screws are already through the mobo. Or should I remove that and put on the new one,

No I had a Seidon 120V replacing with Hyper 212 both cooler master though.

The problems keep getting worse for me, the old backplate came off, but when trying to fit thew new one with my brother he dropped a nut behind the motherboard which I can't find now.

When you drop something behind the motherboard does it make its way to the bottom of the case or am I going to have to take out the motherboard now?

Yeah don't worry I found it (by shaking the PC!) , I am installing the cooler at the moment. I am pretty sure on so many occasions I might have broke the motherboard e.g. screw scratched it.

I will report back with my results.

I have been trying to fit the X bracket to the motherboard but everytime I try to do so one of the screws seems to lift off the standoff into the air and thus not letting me screw it down. Others have had the same problem (google hyper 212 screws not long enough) but I still can't figure it out, will report back in the morning.

Make sure it's the right way up.

Also they are sometimes stupidly made.
