Hi everyone and thanks in advance for reading this. I really need some help and any Input would be gladly appreciated..

So 3 days ago I installed Windows 10... Now the reason I list the exact time is because it might or might not be related to my problem.

A few hours ago my applications started freezing. I then realized that my second SSD, a 500GB Samsung 840 Evo (I bought half a year ago) was randomly disconnecting from my pc and that caused the Applications installed on there to freeze. After a restart it was there again. However after another one it entirely stopped and I have no access whatsoever on it now.

When I wanted to install Windows 7 again I also noticed that my optical drive is no longer being recognized. I can put in a CD but nothing will happen and the drive is not listed.

Now my PC is almost 6 years old and I suspect it might be my motherboard dying. Êverything was fine until I installed Windows 10 and this happening 3 days after that might just be a coincidence... I did some searching but nobody else had disappearing drives being a Problem.

I really am clueless as to why my drives are failing and some help would be gladly appreciated.

Here's a list of all my components: Except for the SSD that disappeared and my GTX980, everything in there is 6 years old.

I was thinking... Maybe these issues could be driver-related. Meaning that upgrading to Windows 10 made the current drivers useless... Now I don't know what optical drive I have and I can't find any windows 10 drivers for the SSD. I'll try finding some for windows 8.1 as those must be the most recent ones.

Which SATA controller are those two drives connected to?

The SSD should be connected to one of the two 6Gb/s SATA ports on the Z68 chipset. The remaining drives should be on the other SATA ports on the Intel Z68 chipset.

If you're using the any of the SATA ports on the Marvell 88SE9172 controller then you will need a Windows 10 supported device driver.

They are both connected directly to the SATA ports on the Z68... After another restart the SSD is back again but the optical drive is still not here. I also don't suspect the SSD to stay here for long..

Yup... :/ However I'm not sure the latest Firmware is compatible with Windows 10 yet.

No trace of them. Even though the SSD is back (probably not for too long) the optical drive is still nowhere to be seen.

If we can narrow it down to driver issues I'll gladly reinstall Windows 7.. But doing so with the Problem being my Hardware would make things even worse.

How can I find out what the cause of the SSD disappearing is?

Alright while I was playing League of Legends the SSD disconnected again...

Whenever I see another guy having a Problem with this.. updating the drivers usually works for them. So could it really be just a driver related issue? Hence downgrading to Win7 would solve it again?

If a cable doesn't solve it could you also do a clear cmos. After doing that enable XMP to make sure that the ram works at rated specs.
Also install the latest drivers for the chipset and sata (Intel® Rapid Storage Technology) again.Install the chipset first.

I didn't think that would cut it but I still tried another cable.. didn't work.

I went ahead and tried to install the latest drivers.. chipset driver installation was ok but the intel rapid storage tech wouldn't install.. it said my system would not be compatible..

I thought maybe I could install windows 7 again on another drive and have both systems?? So that I could check if it would work with windows 7. Then I'd know that it's totally driver and not hardware related.

Were you installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology 14.5.0.1081 Production Version?

Oh I was actually installing the one from gigabyte.com recommended for my current motherboard. Upon trying to install the drivers you provided I get the following message again.. : This platform is not supported

Ok I just copied it into the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder. That right? I'll reboot and see if it happens again.

No. You need to update the existing driver to use the new driver. You can do this through Windows' Device Manager.

UPDATE

So I went ahead to install my old Windows 7 on the SSD and whilst installing it I randomly got an error message.
MOST probably, the SSD disconnected again during the installation hence the error.
The SSD is also not appearing in the BIOS anymore meaning it has completely disconnected and hasn't come back so far... I guess the SSD is the problem... or the motherboard acting up? The Mobo is 6 years old and the SSD is half a year old. How do I test which hardware is faulty?

What steps can I take from here?

EDIT at 2.38 AM ....lol

So I replugged pretty much every sata device etc. and now I finally succeded installing Windows 7. Now I have both Windows 10 and Windows 7 on separate SSD's and on Windows 7 I have no issues.

THEREFORE it is driver-related and I'll have to wait to use Windows 10 until all the driver updates are available :)

Another sad Update.. after happily spending some time with trusty old Windows 7 I got a bluescreen... Now being on Windows 10 again, the SSD is not being recognized again.. So it's gotta be the SSD's being faulty, right?

Please help..

I unplugged the SSD and did a clean Windows 10 install. Even the optical drive is now back at it and everything works flawlessly without the 500gb ssd. So that must've been it. Good thing it's still on warranty after only 3 months. I just hope samsung won't send it back because they didn't find the mistake.. I figure they'll shortly plug it in, it appears, and they will send it back as "being fine" just like gigabyte with my gtx780ti... I had to live 4 months without a gfx card.

I guess this issue is solved... Oh well at least it wasn't the motherboard. That would've been a real pain for my wallet lol
