Delays with the 14nm process put the release so close to Skylake that they just quietly release a few SKU's and moved on. In fact problems with the 10nm process is the reason they added an additional architecture tweak generation after Skylake called Kaby Lake. Cannon lake should be the first 10nm CPU's around 2017.
