Building a new small form factor system and need to decide what CPU to use

Hi Guys,

This is one of many questions I have at the moment regarding a new system that I want to build so if you could also assist me with those questions that would be brilliant thanks!

I'm hoping to build a small form factor Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX system for university in September and I'm unsure of what processor to use. I've applied to study computer science so will be using the system for work but also gaming, watching films etc. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth going for the brand new Skylake or just going with Haswell. From what I understand there isn't that big a performance increase from Haswell to Skylake and I'm not sure whether I'd notice that in my tasks. Cost is also a factor and I presume (like any other products) Haswell will be slightly cheaper as it's older. I will most likely choose an i5 CPU as I can't justify buying an i7 for my needs- however I'm open to suggestions and advice if anyone thinks otherwise.

I'll be no doubt posting one or two more questions about this system so if you could keep a look out that would be much appreciated. All the best!

Thanks for your reply! I really play FIFA, COD, Crysis etc. Wouldn't say I'm an intensive gamer though.
I've got my eyes firmly set on an Intel i5 as I am impressed with my 3570k in my current rig.
I'd like the system to be quite small. Something that you can put on a desk and not take up a lot of room. The prodigy in my eyes is just too big. I'm really liking the look of the SG10 by Silverstone as it's pretty small for the amount of hardware you're able to put inside of it. The Node 304 is good too. I will definitely be using both an SSD and a HDD so the case must be able to support both.

Thanks for your suggestion! Although can I just say it's not a solution, I accidentally selected it as a solution when I only meant to reply and I can't undo it on my stupid phone! So sorry about that. Yeah I like the look of that case but I'm going to create a separate thread soon about what case to choose (if you could contribute to that forum when you see it, that would be great thanks). At the moment I'm trying to decide between Skylake and Haswell.
