Hi there! Since a few months, my PC freezes randomly when browsing, especially while flash player is running (I'm using Chrome). Today, I tried starting Microsoft Edge, and the same problem ocurred. When the crash happens, the screen freezes, I can't move the mouse (it still is powered though), and the PC won't reboot, just stays freezed. Only thing I can do at that point is to reboot using the power button. Strangely, it doesn't happen a lot, probably a few times a week.

My PC specs are:

WINDOWS 10 Pro (recently upgraded from 8.1, same problem there)

MB: Asus P8Z77-V LX2
CPU: i5 3570k
RAM: Kingston 4x4GB 1600MHz DDR3
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 770 OC 4GB
SSD: Samsung EVO 850 500 GB

Hope you can help me fix this problem, thanks!

Solution
There are plenty of overclocking guides which gives a lots of information. You might want to read before trying. You could also do offset overclocking which will allow you to keep power saving features on such as Intel Speedstep and C States.

General overclocking guide:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1291703/ivy-bridge-overclocking-guide-asus-motherboards
Offset overclocking:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1219588/updated-part-ii-offset-mode-overclocking-starter-guide-and-thread

You shouldn't plug in a number in the BIOS settings and call it a day since you have different hardware. You should ideally find the ideal voltage to run the cpu at 4Ghz on your motherboard. You can probably use negative offset voltage for 4Ghz.
For my pc, i could use...

Hey there, I have got the Corsair CP-9020045-EU 760 W. I never changed any setting for overclocking in the bios, I think it's on "Auto", but I will check it again.

Will do that. Following options are available in the bios: AUTO/Manual/X.M.P, I got it on Auto, should I try something else?

It's kinda strange since I can play games like LoL, Witcher 3 and Battlefield without any problem.

I'm going to do the memtest

You got the cpu at stock speeds most likely, check with cpu-Z and see what the max clock speed you get. If you go up to 3.8Ghz, it is at stock speed. You could try XMP.

I think it goes up to 3.8, yep, I will try XMP first, then will do the memtest! I will report back soon, thanks for the help!

Edit: With XMP it's running a bit smoother (subjective impression, CPU is at like 4 Ghz now, Ram at like 800 Mhz). I am now running memtest, for how long should I run it? I feel like such a noob now!

Ok so I changed it to XMP, which made the PC faster, but didn't fix the problem. Memtest showed 0 errors in 8 hours of testing. Anything else I could look for?

Try running with one stick of ram instead of four. Test every slot with each stick of ram. If they all have errors, then it's not memory then.
You could try to take out the gpu and see if any errors will occur if you run on integrated graphics? If it doesn't then its either your gpu or gpu drivers.

Ok, I ran these the whole night and none of it showed an error. GPU was taken out, occurs, GPU was set to do everything, problem occurs. It's just while browsing, not even gaming or something. Could it be a browser/flash player fault?

Will try that, thanks!

Also, what I have to add is, that, this problem never ocurred up until like 2-3 months ago. I couldn't find any reason for it, back then, though (looked up installed updates, drivers, etc), so I highly assume it's a browser or flash player problem? Is that within the bounds of possibility?

Hi there! I waited for the whitescreen (this time) to finish and it rebooted as you said, giving me the following errors I read via whocrashed:

On Sun 09.08.2015 11:39:21 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\080915-3687-02.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x14D220)
Bugcheck code: 0x133 (0x1, 0x1E00, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. This problem might be caused by a thermal issue.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

On Sun 09.08.2015 11:39:21 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys (nvlddmkm+0x1A49ED)
Bugcheck code: 0x133 (0x1, 0x1E00, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. This problem might be caused by a thermal issue.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 353.62 , NVIDIA Corporation).
Google query: NVIDIA Corporation DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

I excluded the termal issue, since the GPU and Core temps were all normal (GPU 40°, CPU 40-50°).

What should I do?

I'm on 353.62 already. For the CPU overclock, should i just switch it back to Auto? Or how can I completely disable it

In the bios choose to load optimized defaults. Then turn back on XMP. In the advanced mode of the bios, go to the AI tweaker tab, there should be yellow text stating what the max turbo clock speed your cpu would run at, if it is at 3.8Ghz that you can just save and exit.
I know that for driver 353.62 has issues with 900 series cards, I not sure if the 700 series cards have similar issues with the 900 series but it is worth the try.

I just reset it to default and 3.8 Ghz and will now watch the issue. I will comment whether it has been solved or not :)! Thanks a lot for everything!

Okay, after doing those changes I noticed idle temperature increases:

GPU: 42°
CPU: 45-50°
Core0: ~ 50°
Core1: ~ 41°

Load:

GPU: up to 80°
CPU: up to 60-70°
Same for cores

Is that normal? Before these changes, it always was at like 40 idle, 50-60 load, gpu ~75 (i did a clean graphics driver reinstall aswell). System runs really smooth, though

Your load temps are fine for both gpu and cpu.
Depending your ambient temperature, your idle temps could be slightly higher than most people. And what cpu cooler are you using? As long your load temps are fine, idle temps aren't too important.

It's very hot here at the moment, so that could be the problem, 24° ambient. I'm using the NOCTUA NH-U9B-SE2

You do have high idle temps. my i5 3570k is overclocked to 4.2Ghz, max voltage is 1.216v, ambient is 25C and cpu core temps hovers 30-35C. I am running a NH-C14 cpu cooler single fan at 900RPM.
Perhaps you need to some new thermal paste.

It was lower before I changed the bios settings to default, idk :S

Okay so my load temp is "low" but my idle temp is "high", what can the reason be? Thanks for any help! I will try to spread some new NT-H1 later.

I just cleaned my pc and changed the thermal grease, I'm now running idle: Core #0 43°, 1 32°, 2 30°, 3 34°; load: 53°, 47°, 47°, 50°, pretty neat! Atleast it is for me..
