I had recently been fixing my dads work laptop at home, it was full of viruses and pretty screwed up, I cleaned using malwarebytes, avast and spybot search & destroy, even after removing all the viruses it was still a bit wonky, all the while windows installed a bunch of updates, finally I got one big update of windows vista service pack 1, I let it install and then it asked to restart the PC, at which point it got stuck, with the screen showing " !! 0xc0190036 !! 718/99376 (thumbcache.dll) " and nothing else, its stuck at this point and I can't even enter safe mode because that gets stuck as well, not sure if I have a restore point because earlier while I was cleaning the viruses I couldn't access the old restore points, I don't have the vista CD but I do have windows 7,8 disks, can I use win 7 disk to perform system repair?, please help me resolve this issue all I need is that the laptop is boot-able again and no data is lost.

I figured out a solution and i am posting this here in case someone else has a similar issue. I created a visa recovery disk by downloading the iso file from a torrent link, but the laptop wouldn't boot from cd even though i had changed the boot order in the bios, so eventually i found this (http://maian.org/blog/2010/07/select-boot-device-sony-vaio/), and one of the comments mentioned this-
F10 - Recover or maintain your system
F11 - Start from media (USB device/optical disc)
F12 - Start from network
F2 - Start BIOS setup
F4 - Shut down,
so i searched for vaio recovery and found this page (https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/41931/~/how-to-perform-a-system-recovery-using-the-vaio-recovery-center.)
and then i pressed F10 immediately after pressing power button & just selected the restore option to go back to a earlier system restore point.
