Can't Initialize 4TB WD Black in Win7 64bit

Purchased and installed a 4TB WD Black Internal HDD (WD 4003FZEX) under Win 7 Professional 64.

Sometimes (not always) a box pops up that says it needs to be initialized, and gave me the choice between MBR and GPT. This is what I expected and I selected GPT each time but I received one of two different error messages, both from the Virtual Disk Manager: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” and “Incorrect function.”.

Sometimes (not always) the HDD shows up in Disk Management as Disk 3 – Unknown – Not Initialized. When I right click on it the Initialize Disk command is in grey vs black and will not work.

The HDD seems to always show up in Device Manager – Disk drives as SCSI Disk Device. If I try to update the driver software: “Windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date.” (I have, of course, updated all my system drivers and installed all Windows Updates.)

I have two other 3 TB WD SCSI drives in this computer that I was able to normally initialize as GPT with Healthy 279.39 GB NTFS single partitions, and have been using these for a couple years.

Welcome to the community, Phil!

I'm very sorry to see having such issues with the 4 TB WD Black. I'd recommend you to try using a different SATA cable or SATA port on the mobo with this WD Black and see if that will help you initialize it. I'd also try what @Samat suggested and connect the HDD to a different computer.
Another thing you should definitely do is test the HDD's health and check up on the SMART data status by running Data LifeGuard Diagnostic tool. Here's a link to it, just make sure you run the QUICK as well as the EXTENDED test: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=hmyF86

Let me know how it goes!

I ran the WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostic tests the images show the results - "SMART Enable Operation error!". I’m guessing the drive needs to be initialized before the test will perform.

I used my other PC – same OS, but about a 3 year earlier build – same results unfortunately.

The preview is only showing one image, but the other is basically the same.

Hi again, Phil!

Unfortunately, it seems like your 4 TB WD Black is faulty/damaged since it doesn't even want to pass the test. :( I'd strongly recommend you to get in touch with our technical support and send your RMA request. We should be able to provide you with a replacement soon enough.
Here's an article from our website that explains the whole RMA process and the steps you should tackle: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=mUUU0S
And the WD Support Contacts here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=S6ZiyL

Best of luck! Hope I was helpful though! :)
