Problem
I am building a new pc for a friend of mine and have some weird problems:
-Windows is up and running but has freezes after short times where I need to force a restart by pressing the power button.
-On each startup there are some error codes displayed which I neither find in the mainboard manual nor in the internet: 99, 9C, B4, ..., 9C, A2 (it's displayed quite fast...)
-When I boot the pc again after some time it turns completely off after the POST (fans and drives stopping) and boots again automatically.

The system
-Intel Core i7 5820K
-MSI X99S SLI PLUS
-MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G
-Crucial Ballistix Sport Series (4x, 4GB, DDR4-2400, DIMM 288)
-Corsair CS650M (650W)
-Noctua NH-D14 SE2011
-Crucial MX200 (500GB, 2.5")
-WD Black (1000GB, 3.5", Desktop)
-Windows 8.1 64bit

previous attempts
-Switched to second BIOS --> same events again
-Updated factory BIOS to current version (E7885IMS.140 to E7885IMS.180) --> same again
-unplugged usb keyboard and mouse --> an additional error code D7 at the end appeared
-unplugged hdd and ssd --> same error codes

For me it looks like a defective motherboard but I am really wondering what the error codes stand for. The temperatures are 34°C on mainboard and 45°C on CPU in idle (BIOS). I guess thats still ok in this hot summer...

What else can I check? Should i request an RMA for the mainboard?

Thanks a lot

I got a new motherboard from my reseller this week.
After replacing it there wasn't even a picture comming on the screen...
Then I removed two of the memory modules and the post screen was back :D
After updating the BIOS it worked also with full memory.

Now I noticed no problems running Windows 10 since two days, but the error codes on startup are still there...

thanks for your help

I have had the same exact problem with the msi x99s SLI krait Edition. I am using 4 sticks of Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 2666Mhz in the correct slots and on every boot the same three error codes come up (9c, b4, a2). I am having some USB problems, but other than that everything works fine, but I need the usb's to work correctly! Is there any way I can fix this? I am also running an intel i7 5820k non OC with m.2 samsung 500GB ssd. Please Help.

On these motherboards the Ram needs to be placed correctly or you will not get a POST. The ram needs to be in slots 1,2,3,4 (to the left of the CPU) for four sticks. From what I understand, the channels work the following way:

Channel A - Slot 1 & Slot 2
Channel B - Slot 3 & Slot 4
Channel C - Slot 5 & Slot 6
Channel D - Slot 7 & Slot 8

Why MSI's diagram is wrong I couldn't tell you, but it seems to just be a misprint. Also, one last thing, when this motherboard boots up, before showing the MSI screen you will see a series of numbers in the bottom right corner of the screen, 9C B4, A2, etc, these are normal POST codes. Not errors.

UPDATE: I just tested this to confirm, you can in fact place the Ram in Slots 1, 2, and 5,6 and it works perfectly. Hope this helps.
