So I just built a rig with the z97 gaming 5 motherboard. The PC wouldn't startup if I had the graphics card (gtx 970) connected in the build. It was connected to a 16-pin pci port. I took the 970 out and it ran perfectly. I installed windows on my ssd and formatted my hdd afterwards. I also performed minor tasks like running Minecraft and downloading programs and games I would regularly use. After this, I went into the bios and changed the default PCI to the third slot which I thought the card was on, and turned off the motherboard's graphics to make sure only the 970 was running. After I did this, I hooked the 970 up again to the 16-pin pci port, which I think is the third slot and it turned on, but no picture showed, when I plugged in my monitor to the gtx 970. So then I took out the 970 again and the same exact thing happened. How will I be able to use my pc again? Please help me!

Solution
I believe you meant to say "16x PCI-e slot on your mobo" not the 16-pin pci port. You also need to have the power connections plugged into the GPU from the PSU. Like pictured below:
