I had a 980 with coil whine so I sent it back and got another 980 and got the same exact coil whine. I returned the card all together and got a 980ti. Well guess what same coil whine. So I started to think maybe it's something else. The whine is definitely the gpu. My psu is about 3 years old so maybe that's an issue? I tried a backup psu that I have that is about a year older but not used even half as much and I still got coil whine. Could it be my mobo? I've turned on and off a bunch of power settings in bios but nothing changes. I oc my i5 2500k but whether it's oc or not I get the whine. Should I try another PSU or try yet another card?

first make 100% sure its the gpu, maybe the whining source is the power supply that couldn't handle the new upgrade and started to whine,

you have to know if its the gpu then you can do nothing about it , vsync maybe reduce it , but some guys said they solved it with better power supply, its a rare cases though but i think that will solve your problem as you have tried 3 cards , but just to make sure try your 980ti on another system with decent psu just to make sure before wasting more money on new psu that could not solve your problem.

They have sent you 2 card and this time a 980ti. So i think its not the gpu problem. PSU might be the next thing to focus on. as soon as 980ti is high end card , it probably needs more power than 980. As far as i know , under heavy load it needs around 450 watts of power maximum. I suggest you to try a decent branded psu with enough power supply (E.G. corsair RM750 , GS700 , GS800) any of them just for a trial if you can. It will make sure that if it is the PSU or the GPU. It cant be motherboard.
