Quick background. I run win7 x64 pro. Have a Seagate 4tb external USB3 with all my photo/Lightroom work.

Previously, I tried the Win10 preview on a separated SSD. I physically detached my win7 drive, and installed the win10. Now that 10 has released I want to try again and install the release version. Same procedure, switched out start-up drives, but this time the Seagate would not show up.

After switching back, again it would not show up under 7. Ran DISKCHK (both via properties/tools, and CMD prompt CHKDSK /R: was able to get it up and running after 24 hour scan. CHKDSK did not report anything bad?

Now I'm missing groups of files and folders. Example on the R drive (Seagate 4tb) a folder on the root ALEXA is completely missing. Then in a Folder: PHOTOGRAPHY: WEDDING lightroom reports half the files are missing. Literally the first half.

I don't believe it is the drive. Stupid me, I then thought lets boot into Win10, then have it CHKDSK my Win7 drive. Well that screwed up that drive a bit.

When back to Win7, clearly whole applications are gone LIGHTROOM PHOTOSHOP etc.

So much for Win10.

I believe the files are still there. I think the directories got screwed up by win10.

Any other options to get my files back? They haven't been overwritten.

It seems like those files and folders most recently added to the drive are missing. Older folders are in tact.

Any advice

Crazy.

Thanks

Maxi

Someone told me to run

f:attrib -s -h /s /d (but I don't know what that does?

Well, first rule to data loss and recovery problems, it's like a fire.
STOP DROP AND ROLL.

The longer you use the drive in question, the more likely the damage will be permanent.
I don't really have the time to help you fix this as it's late, but I figured I'd pop in with the important bit.

Actually. I'm running Recuva now. 15 hours, but its not showing any files yet. It shows 1.64 TB used I don't remember how much was used prior to this. But I don't think a mass amount of files are gone.

No way to rebuild the file directory?

please try these command to recover your missing files

attrib -s -h /s /d

first you go to command prompt ( start then click run and type cmd or command on the textbox)

next, the command prompt will appear..
you need to find out what the drive location of your external HD..

then type this..
for example your external hard drive on F:

f:attrib -s -h /s /d

then enter
...
and wait after few minutes and the files will recovered..
sometimes you will see the folder with no name ..what you can do is to open it..your files is inside..
