Hey guys I want to know approximately how much I can overclock the following build:

I made sure that the motherboard can overclock well but it seems I have to update the BIOS (which I have never done before) and I hear can be somewhat risky. If you guys think I can get a better part in my build then please feel free to give me a shout! I'm trying to limit my cost as much as I can so the cheaper the parts, the better.

You should be able to Overclock it to 4.5Ghz without much issues. Any higher and it becomes a very risky game.

And Yes, Some boards will need their BIOS to be updated in order to work with the 860K At this point, including the Gigabyte board you listed. It's best to update the BIOS via USB Flash Drive. There are guides online on how to do so.

Hope this Helps.

I have the MSI A78M-E45 with the 860K and I use it at 4.3Ghz. If your board doesn't support the 860k then you will have to have another chip that is recognized in order to flash the BIOS and then put the 860k in. That's what I had to do. Unless you have a compatible FM2 chip sitting around, you will have to figure that in to your total cost. I was able to find one on eBay for about $20.

I found this thread by searching for information for myself about achieving a higher OC. I can't push it past 4.3, but my BIOS is voltage locked, which I assume is what causes this limitation. I can get it to 4.5 and it will boot, but is not stable at all.

I don't mean to hijack, but can anyone give advice how to go about increase an already stable overclock? It may be helpful to the OP to know this also. I tried using overdrive to increase voltage, but that doesn't seem to help me. I don't know if 4.3 is the max I can reach or if I'm doing something wrong, because I have noticed that most other people are achieving similar OC to mine at lower voltages than my mobo is auto selecting. Is it possible that I should decrease voltage instead of increasing in order to achieve stability?

I've managed to get my X4 860K to 4.6 Ghz at 1.45V but after 1 hour stress testing it failed so with probably a litle bit of extra volts it should become stable but I found that 1.45V was enough so I put my 860K at 4.5Ghz and now it is rockstable. Once I've tried 4.7Ghz and it was able to boot into Windows but when stress tested it failed and when applying a little bit of voltage it really didn't like that and it wouldn't boot anymore. Clear cmos and everything was back to normal, so now I am staying at 4.5Ghz.
