PC freezing randomly at first, now won't boot

Ugh, another PC freezing thread. It's been a long time since I've had to post a question on a tech forum for PC issues. I'm in the IT industry and am just always able to Google my way out of problems. But this one has really got me.

The PC in question is running Windows 7 64-bit, AMD Athalon X2 7550, motherboard is ECS A780GM-A, 4GB RAM, and a few sata hard drives. A few days ago it started freezing up at random. No mouse keyboard, Ctrl+Alt+Del, nothing. It was just once or twice a day. I ran some memory tests, which all came back clean, as well as deep hard drive scans, also all clean. I was able to run those test just fine for the most part. But then yesterday after freezing, and trying to reboot it, it would freeze at the Windows splash screen. And since then it's been in various states of freezing, none of which include actually getting into the OS. At one point I was able to get it up into safe mode, but now I can't even do that.

Here's the interesting part. I figured I might as well just format the drive and reinstall the OS, but decided I'd go Ubuntu this time. So I popped the latest Ubuntu DVD in, and wanted to just boot off the CD so I could move some files around before formatting the drive. So I'm just booting off the DVD. It froze even doing this! It almost brought up an Ubuntu desktop, but froze before fully loading it. I rebooted and was able to get it up to a full Ubuntu desktop off the DVD, but not sure how long it would have lasted before freezing again. So at this point I'm really thinking something hardware related. I unplugged every device except for the monitor and the keyboard, and the problem did not go away. In fact, I got a BSOD this time, but unfortunately it went away before I could get to it and see what it said. And the next reboot give the BSOD. Just freezing again. It's so unpredictable. My next step is to remove all the internal components and start adding them back in one by one, but in the mean time I thought I'd post a note up here to see if anyone has any ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Update: So I've narrowed it down to not being the power supply, or the cpu fan, which I thought could be faulty because it was wheezing. Not memory or hard drives. So I guess it's got to be motherboard or cpu. But last night I was able to load up an Ubuntu live cd and it stayed up all night with no freezing. So I'm thinking not cpu. Almost ready to give up and rebuild, but really wish I could figure this thing out. I guess I'll try to update the mobo bios and see what happens.

Any other ideas?

Sorry if I'm posting this wrong, just trying to reply to your answer. Anyway, I did try another PSU, although it wasn't has high a wattage as mine. Mine is 500 watts, the one I tried was 300. It had pretty much the same results.

Ha well I do have one more power supply I can try if you're still going with PSU. And I actually did replace the CMOS battery with a brand new one. Actually had a message saying it was dead and clock was not setting.

Well I thought I'd just pop in and update. I swapped out all hardware on the motherboard, and even had a compatible cpu. So I changed everything except the motherboard, and the problem was still happening. So I determined something was bad on the motherboard and just decided to dump it. Wasn't worth saving lol. Thanks for all the suggestiosn.
