I just got a new computer (Asus M32AD desktop). It is running Windows 8.1 and has a 3TB hard drive that has two partitions. C: is Windows and has a capacity of 150GB; D: is Data and has the remainder of the space, approximately 2.7TB.
This is my first experience with Windows 8; our other computers run 7 and Vista. I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around how to get the best use of the full 3TB of drive space. The D: partition was completely blank when we got the computer. Everything is in C: under the normal Windows file structure, filed by user. If I go through the Start/App screen and look at PC Settings -> PC and Devices -> Disc Space, it says there is 109GB free of 149GB. If I look at This PC I can fully see both drives and their size/space used.
What I can't figure out is this:
If the PC is configured to use the normal Windows file structure, and saves everything under each user's account name in the respective folders, how on earth am I ever supposed to use the space in D: Data? When I installed Minecraft for my son I told it to install to D: but all it put there was the launcher. All of the game files, mods, etc. still got installed on C: under AppData in his user profile folder.
What am I missing? I feel like this should be an easy fix in a setting somewhere, but I dug around for literally hours today and couldn't find anything relevant. Is there a way to get 8.1 to access that other partition in its normal operating procedure or do I need to somehow change the sizes of the partitions? Even if I did that it seems like eventually it would get to the point where I'm back in this same position.
Will upgrading to Windows 10 affect this in any way? What exactly is the advantage of having the drive partitioned in this way? I could understand it if we were dealing with 2 separate physical drives, but why bother partitioning 1 drive in this particular manner?
Thanks in advance for any help.
