Connects to router, but no Internet access.

A friend of mine has his daughter staying with him for a few months and wants to connect to his wireless network, but cannot. Here are the facts:

1. His Win7 machine has been connected to the network for years with no problem.
2. His new iPad is connected to the network with no problem.
3. Her Win7 laptop connects to the router but has no internet access.
4. She has used her laptop in at least 3 other wireless networks of friends and can connect to all of them with no problem.
5. She brought her old laptop which connects everywhere but does not on her father's network.
6. Her machines are set to obtain the IP address automatically and to obtain DNS server address automatically.

She really needs her computer to work from his home and is desperate for a solution.

Paul, it could be a zillion things, but sometimes the stupidest easiest things are what works. I used to have a problem with my Iphone 4, for some reason it would just stop connecting to the router. What cured it for me was resetting the router; something in it would get corrupted and it would just say FU to the phone, everything else would work at the same time.

IDK about laptops and moving about because I have a desktop, but I have a thought here, this assumes that she has a connection in her network specifically for each router she uses. I think that is how it works.

Anyhow, I am thinking since she has a "limited" connection that windows is setting her connection that her laptop uses at her dad's as PUBLIC instead of HOME. If it's...

Can she ping an internal/external host? Also, what Antivirus is she running?

I've seen it a couple times recently where if someone is running Kaspersky/AVG's firewall, it seems to break their internet access whilst connecting to certain networks.

I tried to answer before but my reply is not being displayed. If this is a duplicate, please disregard.

Thanks for the reply, but this doesn't explain why her machine works on other networks but not on her fathers.

Anyhow, I am thinking since she has a "limited" connection that windows is setting her connection that her laptop uses at her dad's as PUBLIC instead of HOME. If it's public, it will often be limited because the default firewall settings and permissions are a lot more strict. When I was on windows 7, I had a similar limited connection one day because it's somehow got switched. The solution was to change the type to home. Mine was stubborn and if i remember, I had to go into the registry to do it. Going to assume she has 7 and post a link on how to fix. The principle applies to 8 and probably 10, it's just the how may be different. I hope this fixes it.

If that isn't it try looking here at this page about 2 active networks:

This is all just part of the troubleshooting process. We need to know what her machine can do/won't do before we recommend some kind of fix.

Has her fathers modem/router been restarted since this issue started occurring? Just because other devices are working doesn't mean that restarting wont solve the issue.

Thanks for the suggestions. Part of my problem is that I am not in her father's home right now so I can't try the various solutions you all have come up with. I'll print them out and then post what I find after I run these tests.

royalcrown, many thanks for the effort and advice. She never got her computer to connect. She used her Dad's computer but now has moved to her new apartment where her laptop and phone connected to the building's network with no problem.
