I am not sure but I was playing dying light, (my real resolution is 1080p) however I went to settings and changed the game resolution to 1366x768 and nothing changed other than fps. what did it actual change?

THe RESOLUTION changed !!!!!
You are viewing it in terms of visual quality and trying to find any higher detail like reflections or beautifuls lights right. That is not resolution dependent . there are other options for that .
What you have lowered is visual clarity in terms of the image produced . earlier your system was generating 1920*1080 pixels on screen , which is your res. and now it is producing only 1366*768 pixels which is roughly half the value when the digits are multiplied. You can notice it if your screen is very large and you look closely. For mall screens , such minor reductions in resolution wont be noticeable. Try 640*480 , then you will realize what is changing.

Lowering the resolution limits the amount of pixels on the screen so 1920x1080 has just over 2 million pixel whereas 1366x768 has just over 1 million. So did the video quality actually change? or am I just rambling about something completely different.
The less pixels on your screen the less your GPU has to render so it pushes little no no strain running a low resolution game on a 1080p capable card.
