Hello,

Will an oil leak from a fan damage/short computer parts (specifically graphics and motherboard)?

I have a cooler master hyper t2 installed on an AMD board with the fan faced down/horizontal position (per manual/instructions). It uses a 92mm sleeve bearing fan. After 3 weeks of use, the fan made some faint 'ticking' noise, so I used a flashlight to inspect it and noticed greasy oil slowly running around the fan frame. It was about to drip down onto my graphics card!

I turned off pc and I removed the fan to clean out the oil with alcohol. It had a dark yellow color. I still have the fan under observation but so far it no longer has leaked and the noise mysteriously disappeared. Since it no longer leaks and makes noise, I am still deciding whether to replace it with a 2 ball bearing fan I immediately bought from a different company. Could this fan oil have destroyed the GPU and motherboard or wherever else it would have touched?

I asked Cooler Master tech support and the person told me it is 'common to have excess oil residue from production' but did not answer whether the oil could have damaged the computer.
