Hey all, I have a desktop computer with Gigabyte (Z77-D3H) motherboard and the ethernet cable always worked on it, all of a sudden (After a lightning hit near my house and I had a power outage) it does not want to work anymore.

I do have a second PC directly next to it which also uses the same router and same type of cable. This system uses the Asus Maximus motherboard but it has no problems with the cable even though the same power outage happened to both machines.

At first I thought it was my cable that fried or something, so I plugged it into my second machine and it worked just fine so it must be something to do with the machine that it wont sense the cable.

I have heard that I have to get a driver for the ethernet cable when this happens, But I cannot seem to find one for Gigabyte Z77-D3H motherboard.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thank you.

Edit: The computer that does not sense the cable has Windows 8.1 and the other one that still works has Windows 7 (If this matters at all) And I am not sure I a posted this to the correct board.

Then it tells you the adapter on the motherboard has failed, or the controller chip on the motherboard that deals with the Lan port has failed.

So your only option here is to fit a Pci or a x or x4 lane Pci-e based lan adapter card if you wish.
They don`t cost much these days about £10 or more should get you a 1000Mbps Lan card. to get internet back to your tower, via cable connection or if you prefer use a wi-fi usb adapter if your router has wi-fi and you get a good signal from where your system is situated in your house from the wifi enabled router.

PS: On a side note make sure your motherboard has not defaulted to its factory settings for some reason.
Because if it does the option to enable or disable the on board lan port of...
First of all go into control panel.
Then System and security.

And click on device manager.
verify that the Ethernet port on your motherboard is working and has a driver installed.
You will know this because if there is any problem there will be a yellow exclamation mark next to the ethernet device.
It will also tell you if the device failed to start and if the driver is missing or corrupted. Reporting as not working or an Error code 10.

If it seems fine.
Then go to the advanced settings of the ethernet adapter and try changing the duplex modes and the speed negotiation of the adapter. Option are Auto negotiate 10 Base 100 Base or 1000 Base full duplex or half duplex.

Of course even if you verified the same cable works with another computer, still try a new one with the system that has a problem.

If you are getting errors reports in windows to do with the Ethernet adapter of the motherboard it is likely that it has failed due to a lightning strike or power surge. They can be very susceptible to breaking due to this. You can verify visually if the adapter and cable is working by the lights that should be present on or near where you plug the cable into the RJ45 connector of the motherboard. Led`s situated on the RJ45 port.

Amber is often 10 base or 100 base Green is often 1000 base or 1Gbps.
Last of all make sure you do still have a network config set up in windows check this in network and sharing. Or delete the old network config and set up a new home network if connecting to a router.

I did the first step you said and the Network Adapters tab in the Device manager is missing. However my other PC has it like it supposed to.

Because if it does the option to enable or disable the on board lan port of the motherboard may be set to disabled. As a default bios setting so just have a check in your bios ok, as a last ditch attempt.
Other than that is buy a wifi usb dongle or Lan card Pci or Pci-e based depending on the slots you have on your motherboard that are free to fit the cards.
