I have been looking around for the best $200-250 CPU and I came across Intel i5 4690k and Xeon E3-1231 v3. I understand that you cannot overclock a Xeon and it is locked at around 3.5. I just don't know that with Direct X 12 coming out which will be better? The i5 4690k has a integrated GPU and 4 cores but the Xeon has 4 cores plus hyper-threading which makes it have 8 threads. Will Direct X 12 utilize the Xeons 8 threads or the i5's GPU more? Also I can only afford a 212 evo so overclocking will put me around 4.2 GHz how will that compare with the Xeon at 3.5 GHz? If anyone has owned a Xeon 1230 or 1231 can you tell me about your experience with it. How long do you think the i5 4690k will last with its 4 cores I guess whats its "future proofness"?

The only reason people say its not for gaming is because Xeon chips generally cost more and are stuck at lower clock speeds. In this case the choice between an i5 and this Xeon, the Xeon is better because of hyperthreading. Now if you plan on overclocking or running SLI/Crossfire than the i5 will be better.

I believe its the same chip, the difference if you cannot overclock a Xeon and they usually don't work on every motherboard. I suggest checking the MB list to make sure its supported.

Edit: I didn't noticed at first but the Xeon supports hypertreading where as all i5 do not. only i7s. So really the Xeon will be faster if you do not plan on overclocking.
