In my new house the internet hook up is in the garage which means terrible WiFi everywhere and the need to run 70ft Ethernet cables everywhere...

I was told I could buy another router, one that supports extension mode and run one ethernet cord to the desired spot and use it as a wifi hotspot or just run shorter ethernet cords from it? Is this going to kill my speeds/ping?

Besides that who makes quality routers these days? Looking to spend ~$100

Take your pick of routers they can all pretty much do this even if they don't have a special feature. If you search "use router as AP" you will get tons of hits and even youtube video.

It should have no impact on your speeds...you of course need to be sure you choose different radio channels but if the signal is weak already it is not as much a issue.

The use of ethernet cable to extend wireless radio (ie AP) is the standard enterprise solution used by every company. When properly done it provides the best wifi coverage in a building.

You want to pick a router based on the radio abilities.....ie do your need 802.11ac or is 802.11n ok. Most the other feature like parental controls can not be used so they don't matter.

You can get actual AP devices instead of routers but the main feature they have is PoE so you can say mount it in the middle of a ceiling where there is no power plug. It may also have other features that let multiple AP function together but that too is a feature you would pay for and likely never use in a house.
