"Auto right and left clicking" issue while playing MMORPGs

Hey folks

So as the title suggests, I seem to be having a problem with my mouse seemingly right and left clicking (or performing the action in game that this would cause) without me even touching either of the mouse buttons while playing on MMORPGs (FFXIV & Rift).

This issue began while I was still using my trusty old Razer Naga (2012 edition) so I figured there was something not right with it, I took it apart, cleaned it, put it back together and the issue still persisted. After thinking the mouse had had it's day I replaced it with a RedDragon Perdition mouse however this issue is still ongoing. The next port of call was the laptops keyboard so I cleaned the keyboard thoroughly (including underneath all of the buttons) but this issue still has not stopped.

As to the exact issues I'm having, this includes randomly selecting things in my inventory while I'm hovering my mouse over them and not clicking anything, randomly spinning the camera when I am just moving my mouse and am not holding either mouse button down and finally the cursor being unsteady when the mouse isn't being moved. For those who don't know about MMORPGS, these functions are usually carried out by clicking / holding one of the left or right mouse buttons so as you can see this is what gave me the impression that the mouse was at fault but after replacing it with a brand new one this seems to not be the case.

The only other thing I can think is that maybe there is a button on the keyboard that can be used in these games to carry out the same function as a left / right click and that this button is the culprit, however after checking the options menu in both games I cannot identify which, if any button would do this. There certainly seems to be no hint of this in the keybinds section of both menus as far as I can see. I'm really at a loss to solve this problem and I'm itching for an MMO fix but this problem gets so annoying after a while of putting up with it that I end up just doing a /ragequit :kaola:. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

P.s Interestingly, none of these issues happen outside of games.

Some (most?) laptops have the option of tapping the touchpad to trigger a mouse-click. Check your mouse configuration to see if that got enabled accidentally.

Also, carefully check over the keybindings for your MMOs and see if there is some key binding that will do what you are seeing.

Another option is to reset the key bindings to defaults in your games.
re-installing the game may or may not help if the config settings are stored outside the game folder.

Oh my god ... I feel silly now!

I had completely overlooked the trackpad as I haven't used it since day 1 of owning the laptop as I dislike them, and this has just made me dislike them even more lol! I disabled the pad and voila! The issue has stopped now.

Thanks very much, you've saved me a lot of frustration xD!

Glad it worked for you.

My laptop also has the option to disable the trackpad when a mouse is plugged in. I suggest using that option. because if you need access while on the go when a mouse is not available, that can also be a lifesaver.
