Ok so im looking to upgrade my current build to properly max out a new 120hz 2560x1440 monitor. currently my build looks like this
fx6300 OC to 4.6ghz
msi 970 gaming mobo
msi r9 280x
850w evga g2 psu
1tb hdd
120gb kingston ssd
i also have the nzxt h440 razer edition with 9 noctua nf f12 fans in it.

my question is, if i were to swap out my 280x for a sapphire r9 290x 8gb tri-x would i see a significant fps boost at 2k resolution(enough to justify the upgrade)? Also would my psu be able to crossfire 2 r9 290x's?

if not then im just going to wait until i can afford a gtx 980ti 6gb as i dont want to buy a different psu

Solution

You do know the TDP of a 290X is 300 Watts his PSU even if high quality should not be running a PC in the 780 Watt range or higher with his OC on the CPU.

Ok I thought that was going to be a problem should have bought the 1000w. damn hindsight you bastard. If i were to upgrade my motherboard and cpu to lets say an i5 4690k would that still act as a bottleneck for the gtx 980 ti

The EVGA G2 850w psu has MORE than enough power to run an overclocked FX6300 and two 290x.

No current i5 will bottleneck ANY single video card. Even the i5 4430 @ 3.0ghz would be an upgrade to your FX6300.
