Planning my first pc build. I'm getting an i5 4690k and a gtx 970, I was thinking about throwing another 970 in there in the future. Will my cpu be able to handle both cards or will it bottleneck them.

I'd argue the opposite a single 980 ti overclocked can easily beat any 970 sli setup. For one, sli would require on drivers being their and the optimization of the game. The only real point in even going sli is to do 4k which at pooled 3.5gb ram isn't a good idea. Whatever "performance" you'd gain would easily be lost because of vram restrictions at those high resolutions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpmuXd52Ce0 Granted i couldn't find a specific video of a 980 ti to 970 sli comparison. A 980 ti overclocked would easily deliver higher clock speeds then a titan x. Granted the variance of a few fps at 4k would be in favor a titan x. You can still surmise that at 4k resolutions a single 980 ti would far out perform a dual 970 sli set up.

I'd personally say try and buy the best single card gpu you can then get two lower card gpu's. Just on the notion of not having to wait for drivers and the overall head room for the future. Easier to buy a 980 ti or 980 now. Wait a few years and stick another one in for a cheaper price. Though that's my opinion and a dual sli 970 set up should do wonders at 1080p or even 1440p.
