I have a monitor that has a DVI and HDMI input.

A friend has a HDMI switch \ hub that has 4 inputs and one output. It looks something like this:

Sorry ... I accidentally posted before I finished the message.

A friend has a HDMI switch \ splitter that has 4 inputs and one output. It looks something like this:

That's not the exact one, but the port configuration is the same - multiple inputs, one output. So he told me he didn't think it was working, and asked if I could check it for him. Against my better judgment, and years of experience, and a voice in my head that said "dooooon't do it" - I decided to test it for him :(

I ran an HDMI out from my graphics card (GTX 650 Ti Boost) to one of the HDMI ins on the switch. Then I used an HDMI to DVI cable cable from the spliiter to my monitor. (it was the only other cable I had with a an HDMI end) Well there was a brief flash as if it tried to display and then nothing - no matter which input port I tried on the splitter. I tried the splitter with my laptop, going through the splitter, to the same DVI in on the monitor and the same result - nothing. So after confirming that the splitter didn't work, I plugged my monitor back into my GTX 650 Ti - running a regular DVI cable - same config I've always used. Well the DVI input on the monitor no longer works. I have another monitor so I know the ports all work fine on the GPU.

I tried several different cables and switched it to the other DVI port on the GTX 650 - and nothing. I pulled out my GTX 650 and tried running the monitor off of my mobo's onboard graphics - the DVI port. Nothing. I tried the monitor with my laptop, running again to DVI. Nothing.

However, the HDMI port still works on the monitor. The monitor powers on fine. But if I plug anything into the DVI port on the monitor it gives me the "No Signal" cable disconnected error.

So how is it that the splitter switch could cause the monitor port that it was plugged into, to stop working? It's baffling me ... coudl it have fried just that one port?
