i have a MSI 890gxmG65 motherboard, ive read the manual from msi's site and cannot find anything specifically stating achi. does anyone have more experience with this?

i just purchased a samsung evo 500gb ssd, originally when i installed it was gpt i believe and had to erase/wipe everything and reformat it in windows installer to get it to boot but now i want to make sure i can use achi for the performance.

thanks!

*AHCI only shows up if you enable "RAID MODE".

I'm not completely sure how that works.

I suspect you would do THIS:

1. update BIOS if newer exists
2. unhook all but SSD (use GREY SATA connection I think)
3. ensure "AHCI" is set under RAID
4. Install Windows
5. Verify AHCI mode is working http://everydaylife.globalpost.com/check-ahci-mode-properly-enabled-21248.html
6. drivers: chipset, video etc
7. software: anti-virus, etc (I use KLite for video which is great for W10 as well: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm )

does this have to be done via CMD at the start of the install page or is this totally prior to with no OS on the ssd?

Prior.

1. Change to AHCI in BIOS.
2. Install Windows.

Having said that, there are workarounds to change an existing Windows installation but I strongly recommend a fresh installation. If upgrading to Windows 10 I strongly recommend waiting another month. Thus:
1. Change to AHCI in BIOS
2. Install Windows 7/8
3. Upgrade to W10 (say October 2015)
4. Do a CLEAN INSTALL if any issues (can't do a clean install from the start if upgrading to W10)

I will check your manual and get back to you...

i have windows 7 pro, and a windows 8.1 enterprise(cant upgrade to 10) but my end goal is to be at 10.. when stable..

so i guess, (after my class lecture @ 9am) i will change to ahci(but first i have to find this feature) and again, reinstall windows...

Not sure if you have Windows on a hard drive already. If so you might try using Machrium Reflect Free to clone things, but unless it's a hassle I'd do a clean install to the SSD.
