Is the GeForce GTX 480 still any good today?

I've been looking to get an upgrade to my GTX 650, but I don't really want to spend a lot of money at the moment. I have the opportunity to get a GTX 480 pretty cheap, way under $100. I know the 480 is 2 generations older than the 650, but I saw in a lot of benchmarks on passmark that the GTX 480 is still more powerful than many GPU's in the mid-$100 range today. I also remember that NVidia said all Fermi-GPU's will support DirectX 12. So outside of benchmarks, is the 480 still any good today for modern gaming? Do I lose anything by getting a GPU that's essentially 5 generations old than the latest GeForce line today?

I wouldnt get it. Gtx 480 lacks many features of modern cards have like dx 11.1. It's very power hungry and should only perforn as well a gtx 750 ti. Passmark is not a good indicator for actually gaming performance. If you going to buy a used card the amd 7850 is a better buy.

I agree with the post above a 480 will still play games well enough but it isn't really a good buy at 100 dollars. You should be able to find a 7870 in that price range or a gtx 580 which bother perform substantially better than the 480 while being cooler and with the same price range when buying used.

Actually I'd be getting the 480 for around $60-70. And I'm not an expert at graphics hardware, but isn't the 480 going to support DX12 anyways according to NVidia? I'm not sure what feature level means though if there's a difference.

it does indeed offer some good performance, but it comes with some huge downsides

mainly they run HOT.

many moons ago I had one, it took an arctic accelero aftermarket gpu cooler to tame the damn temps.

you also would need a good power supply with at least 42 amps on the 12V.

Did I mention they run hot? >.>

In this case I really have to keep this at sub-$100 GPU's. I found this on newegg, it's not a TI version but do you think it's any good compared to the 480?

Also, I have a spare GeForce GT 740 lying around somewhere, but I don't think it's going to be better than my current GTX 650, let alone the 480...

the gt 740 is the same tier as a 650 non boost.

The 650 ti boost is 2 tiers higher, the 480 is one tier higher than a 650 ti boost.

so if you have a 650 ti boost, then a 480 would not be an worthy upgrade ( 750 ti is one tier under a 480 ).

BUT if you have a vanilla 650, then a 750 ti is a nice upgrade.

I just have a standard GTX 650 I believe and the GTX 750 in that link is also just a standard one. However the 750 is an OC edition if that makes any difference. The standard 750 isn't on that chart, but according to Passmark it is more powerful than even the 650 TI. I'm not sure if it's any good in reality.

the difference would be a wash (if you got factory/overclocked yourself) the 750.

so not a bad idea. =)

Alright thanks for the advice! I'll probably go for that 750 then considering how cheap it is after the rebate. I guess the last question is how good are MSI graphics cards? I've always used EVGA and never really used any other brands except for Zotac & Galaxy in one case.
