new water cooler, temps 85C idle

I just bought a new CoolerMaster Nepton 120XL because it looks pretty sick compared to my current 212 Evo and I'm doing a major re-design of my case, so I was like why not.

Thing is, after installing the cooler my temps have gotten unreasonably high, 85C at idle (didn't even bother doing anything else than shutting the PC down). I tried reseating the cooler many times, the pumps get pretty hot so it looks like it should be in direct touch with the CPU alright (I'm talking 80C hot pumps). Re-applied the paste multiple times, reseated the CPU, changed the way the rad is mounted (switched the position so pumps are down, it's mounted to the rear of my case). Nothing worked. Airflow should be fine as well, one intake fan on the front, one exhaust at the top and the radiator at the rear with two exhausts.

So I finally decided to see if the problem is with the new motherboard I bought (MSI gaming 970) by switching the water cooler back with my 212 Evo. Temps dropped to 25-40 idle instantly (still hot, but nowhere near as bad as with the water cooler), meaning there's something wrong with the water cooler itself or with the way I'm installing it.

Has anyone ran into the same problem with this particular cooler or any other single 120mm rad cooler? I'm not sure if I should just RMA it or still try fiddling with it for a bit more, however according to the manual and to some videos on the internet, I'm doing everything correctly.

Cheers.
