Im planning to buy either the Corsair CX600 or the RM550. Which is of the higher quality and less likely to fail?

Much, much better.

The cheapest 550W unit of decent quality I can find in the UK is a XFX bronze unit for £50: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550sxxb9
But that EVGA unit is just £7 more, Gold rated, slightly better quality and modular. Worth 7 quid any day IMHO.
Neither are great. I used to be a Corsair fan, but for a while now there are almost always better PSUs for the same or cheaper than the Corsairs.

Are you in the US, are you happy to use mail-in rebates? I can make some suggestions if you give me your region.

It's worth posting the rest of your build too so we can make sure you get a PSU that matches your system.

I have a paranoia of PSU frying pc components thats why im extra careful, which of the 2 has the most risk of failure if any?

Both are quality PSU so you're just about as safe as you can be.

This tier list is pretty widely relied on: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html
You'll find the 57 quid GS unit in Tier 1 (the best), and the 50 quid XFX unit in Tier 2.

With either you'd be extremely unlucky to end up with damaged components, but based on reputable, objective reviews the 57 quid GS unit is slightly higher quality.
