Upgrade Graphics card. hey everyone im helping my brother in law set up his pc and he wants the computer to be able to run GTA V. what graphics card would you recommend that would be essentially the best for gaming ect... the price range would be $100-150.

His computer:

Dell Optiplex 980 SFF Desktop - Intel Core i7 2800MHz, 4096MB RAM, Genuine W7Pro (64-bit)

i plan on upgrading the ram to 16gb

Atheus is right, a 750TI is the best bet. Just check the system first to make sure that it has a PCI-E 16X slot. And if it has a half-height PCI-E slot make sure the card purchased is a half-height card. It looks from the pictures I looked at that this system probably needs a half-height card. The one he linked IS a half-height card.

This might not fit, look at this video first seconds, there is a hard drive cage directly above GPU, so not all GPU can fit.

Unfortunately I have seen reports that on some SFF snd DT Optiplexes hard drive cage has to be trimmed with a Dremel for fitting, is it applicable to you, I can not be 100% sure, so if you can purchase this card from a place with a good return policy, do so, if not, look for something else.

Before you do that, you might want to check on the form factor of the motherboard and PSU in there. Dell computers are often built free of any particular standards for board size, screw placement, etc. From the video above, it appears that at the very least the PSU is not ATX, and the motherboard has the CPU and memory mounted in a very strange place relative to the IO panel. I doubt very much you would be able to fit that into another case without modding it.

One good reason to steer clear of Dell for any PC you intend to keep for a while.

This Optipex is build using BTX form factor, not standard ATX, so you can not find a good case, you can use only Optiplex 980 Mini Tower case, a larger one, it will be possible to upgrade to GTX 750TI, however, not many can fit, you can purchase only single bracket card shorter than 7.5 inches.

sorry to keep asking but is there any custom case out there that is bigger and could fit this computer? the small size kinda makes it a pain if i want to add anything to it

Kisianik pretty much said it in his last response. For more clues, take a look at http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/255330-28-mobo-case and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BTX_(form_factor)

Aside from other Dell BTX cases (such as the one he suggested), you're pretty much SOL. Like I said you may be able to fit that half height single slot 750 Ti into that case, but it's not exactly a sure thing either. If you're going to look at buying other parts, I'd just start looking at used Sandy Bridge systems on ebay or craigslist. There should be a flood of them now that 6th gen Sky Lake is out. You'll get a lot more bang for your buck, and your hair won't turn gray trying to figure out what fits where.
