Graphics Cards fans aren't working

I have two GPUs - top 970 bottom 960.

I noticed that my computers fans were not working, this is common because the cord to my motherboard doesnt click right so moving it around causes it to come off sometimes. This particular one is near my 960, so in order to plug it back in I had to take my 960 out to be able to fit my fingers to plug it back in.

After I got my fans to work, I plugged my 960 back in and now both my 960 and 970 GPU fans work up until I reach my login screen.

Note - after my first boot test to make sure my computer case fans were on, it oddly was in my motherboard boot menu. This was strange because I always unplug my keyboard, mouse, and all other usbs. I proceeded to 'Discard changes and Exit" and booted.

I downloaded MSI afterburner and tuning it around I got my fans to work, but this is bothersome and the fact that they don't work without concerns me.

I'm convinced something in the F2 motherboard bios menu was changed regardless of my discarding changes. Any thoughts? All help is greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of people that don't notice that the fans aren't spinning for a long time and when they DO notice it, they think something may be wrong. It actually happens quite a bit. As I said earlier though, the Asus Strix and MSI Gaming 970s/960s fans do NOT spin by default unless the temperature is around the 50c+ mark.

You can test this by launching a game and when the GPU temp gets high enough, you'll see the fan start spinning.
Just out...

Just out of curiosity, why are you using a 970 and 960?

1. Get open hardware monitor and it shows you gpu fan speed/max speed.
2. Play a game
3. Compare GPU max temp to GPU fan max speed
4. If temp > 60 and you gpu fan spun, you're all set!

Well, I initially only had the 960. Then my bud who is a huge tech enthuasist upgraded from dual 970's to dual 980's and he gave me an extra 970. He set my 960 to be for physics and the 970 to be graphics. That's as far as my knowledge of this goes, and we both spent hours tweaking my PC the night we installed the 970, I remember specifically the fans always running on them. I guess I will have to wait for him to wakeup and see what he has to say.

I'll do the tests and see what he says after he wakes up. If it is fixed by then, I will close the thread. I will show him the thread and see whats going on. The answers provided thus far are very logical, and I could be wrong and the GPU fans mightve always been like this. We'll see.

Edit: I accidentally marked your response as solved. Oh well. Thanks for the help. I'm sure I'm over-reacting anyway.

I could be wrong, but the 960 as a physX card probably doesn't merit the extra power requirements to run the extra card. The GTX 970 would do fine by itself.

Also, did you ever answer which models of the GTX 970/960 you have?

Yea i'm not sure how it works when you have different cards with different makers, maybe the MSI software is causing the GTX 960 to use the same fan profile. You will just have to do a bit of testing shouldn't be too hard to figure out what is going on. (Assuming both are kicking on at 60c)
