SATA controller card questions

I apologize in advance for probably being too wordy, but thought the more info the better?

I have 5 HD’s, 1 DVD burner, 1 BluRay player. The BluRay is currently disconnected. Windows 7, but will be moving to Windows 10 after a few months.

I’m going to add a SSD drive, already purchased but not installed yet. The HD’s are NOT in a RAID, and do NOT want RAID. (I have captured a lot of home movies that were on VHS, each tape about 25gb of data. I will be converting those to DVD in the future. That’s what is on most of the HD’s other than the boot drive.) The SATA configuration is IDE, but will switch to AHCI when I add the SSD drive, and reinstall windows.

I have one PCIEX x 1 slot and one PCIEX 2.0 x 16 slot available. I assume the x16 slot would work, since I’m not running Crossfire/SLI. Plus PCI slots, but those would be too slow I assume.

Motherboard is Asus Sabertooth 55i. I need one more SATA port for the SSD, and since going to add a SATA controller, then I could also connect my BluRay player if I ever buy any more BlueRay movies

Which SATA controller card would you recommend? I only need 2 port. Do not need RAID, but if it has that feature I can just not use it. I’ve searched the forum, and see lots of recommendations, but almost all of those are referencing RAID. I’m assuming I can get a controller card for $50 or less? I’ve seen some on newegg for like $15 (syba), but not sure of those. Also, some of those have Marvell chipset or ASmedia, I have no idea which is better.

Would the SATA controller card be AHCI? I’ve read that optical media doesn’t work well if AHCI, how will that work out with the DVD burner? I want to make sure don’t have hiccups when burning all those VHS converted files. Put the DVD on the controller card or MB?

Thanks, Steve

The problem with add-in sata cards is the potential to not work well with the motherbds built in controllers as some motherbds have more than the AMD/Intel ports and your motherbd has 2 addition controllers both by JMicron.

ASmedia and Marvel are prefectly fine for HDD's. I would not expect full sata 6g speeds from them but the newer chips should come close.
The Marvell 9215 is one of those chips where you might as well connect your ssd to the motherbd sata2 port, it will be faster there.
The asmedia 1061 will do much better (just under 400mb/s read iirc)

For purely hdd's you might want to see if you can find a 4 port pciex1 solution. This will give you a little more room to grow.

The two JMicron controllers are listed as: JMB322 Serial ATA RAID connectors, so I assumed I could not use those for anything other than a RAID. Can I use them for just regular SATA ports, meaning, one HD on one, another HD on another, NOT in RAID? Thanks for the info on the chips. Which way would be best to connect the DVD drive, MB or controller card?
Thanks
