I have a 1 TB Seagate HD103SJ. I purchased it about 5 years ago to backup files. I backed up once, but never backed up again. About 5 times I used the drive to transfer something large from a laptop to a desktop, because network transfer is so slow.

I purchased a 2 TB drive as a data drive for a new PC, but that drive was DOA. So while waiting for a new one, I decided to use the 1TB. I loaded a few games on it to see if I liked the games. But it started having trouble loading the games, Then it started having trouble accessing certain files. I installed the game I've been playing on the SSD and tried to delete it from the HDD. But there was an I/O error.

I took the 1TB out of the computer to connect it to an external USB connector: it has the power and SATA connector, it plugs in, and it is then connected via USB. With this connection, the same files I couldn't reach when the HDD was connected internally were reachable. They deleted without a problem, and there were no I/O errors.

What is going on?

Could be the slower transfer of USB is allowing the disk to keep up. If there is a problem on the circuit card (buffer RAM, etc) then the higher speed of the SATA internal connection could cause problems. What does CrystalDiskInfo say about the SMART data?

But if it has been powered on for 5 years ... CrystalDiskInfo will also show how many powered on hours your disk has.
