Hey guys, today I woke up and went straight to my pc to start an assessment I need to get done...
I noticed my internet wasn't connected, but knew that it wasn't the router as my brother's pc is using Ethernet and my phone uses wireless. I changed my Ethernet cable to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with it, but it still didn't work.
After that I searched for troubleshooting solutions on this forum and a few other places, but even after following those instructions it isn't working.
I un-installed and removed the Ethernet controller, then rebooted my PC and nothing seemed to work, it didn't replace the driver and just popped up with some new driver called a default "Ethernet controller" which basically stated my pc was missing one.

After that I went onto my brothers computer and downloaded my Ethernet controller for my motherboard model, and it still didn't work after installing it onto my computer. (It displayed the same message
" This device could not start (Code 10)
(Operation failed)
The requested operation was unsuccessful"

My pc uses an intel i7 4790k haswell chip, and an asus rog maximus VII hero motherboard, I have never encountered this problem before and would really appreciate it if anyone had any helpful advice for my problem.

Definitely seems to be a driver issue. When you installed the new driver did it give any errors during the install process? Did you try to go into device manager and update from there? Right click, select "Update Driver Software". Where were you getting the "This device could not start" error at?

Hey man
I got to device manager > network adapters > 'Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) 1218-V and then under properties in general, the device status is as aforementioned. I got the driver from asus's website for the correct mobo, can provide link to the file if needed. I'm attempting to re install the driver again now to see if there are any error messages, but I don't believe there was any the first time I did it. Update the same error is depicted after installation as it is stated afterwards in properties. I will provide a picture for reference

It's interesting that it says (2) on your connection. Can you take a screenshot of your network connection page that shows what adapters you have, and paste your ipconfig /all (blocking out any identifying / sensitive stuff, like computer name and MAC addresses, I'm assuming you're under a private IP of 192.168 or something like that, if not then you can PM it or we can just use the last octet - I'm new here so not really sure exactly what is considered sensitive).

Also I would try to restart your router. I just spent (literally) 7 hours troubleshooting a similar issue where it was just my computer that was messed up, initially restarted the router, but then focused only on my machine, made a whole bunch of changes but only restarted my computer, then finally 5-6 hours later tried to restart computer and router again and one of those changes somewhere along the way stuck and it fixed it

How do I access all those things? I will do so when you let me know the process :) Also I tried restarting my router a bunch of times, along wiht my computer and that didn't work at all. It's only my computer that is having the issue out of 8 or so devices

Oh wow, yeah, definitely not the router then. Can you screen shot your "Device Manager" page please? Ensuring that at least "Network Adapters" is expanded and anything else that has a yellow triangle is shown as well

Can you right click your Ethernet connection, go to Properties, then the "About" tab, and select "Hardware ID" in the drop down box and paste that here, then go to the "Driver" tab and screenshot that, and also paste the link to the driver that you downloaded?

I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue, so we're going to look at the actual devices hardware ID to make sure that it really is a I218-V (sometimes the wrong name will appear, not often but it happens), then see what driver is currently installed, compared to which one was downloaded. Hopefully we'll find a discrepancy there and be able to fix it real quick, if already has the right driver then we'll have to think of other possible causes

Hmmm.... Try turning off energy efficient ethernet? Sounds kind of similar.... I'll keep looking though. While it restarts, try to go into the BIOS, and restore system defaults (assuming there's nothing crazy you had setup there, if so then the big thing is finding the ethernet controller and making sure it's not disabled, just easiest to restore defaults if you didn't already make changes)

I've reset the bios settings to default and that did nothing, my friend also suggested loading safe mode with only networking and that also didn't work. I think he tried some registry thing and that failed too... I think this is leaning towards either a really crazy virus or a hardware failure

Oh goodness, we never checked the drivers for the motherboard itself, did we? That might have been a major oversight, sorry I've been up for like 36 hours now. Try installing the chipset driver from the same page you linked before, there are four that are just updates of each other, top one is newest. Try running that, restart, see what happens. I need to get to bed soon, got one more thing I need to take care of but I will be offline in about 20 minutes if you can give that a go and see what happens.

If it doesn't work immediately after running the chipset drivers, try to uninstall and reinstall the device like you did before (in Device Manager right click > uninstall, then restart again). Hopefully this works

Quick edit: if you did not already have the chipset and it still doesn't work I'd try to run the install program for the drivers again then restart. I don't think you should need to do this, as even if it didn't install to the device before it should be on your system, but it's one more 5 minute thing to try that could save having to have someone else look at it and paying them out of pocket.

Quick edit part 2: I would definitely hold off on completely blaming the hardware itself though, the odds of it just failing right after installing a new operating system are much lower than a software issue being the cause.

Alright, have a good night as well. If you get the chance to try the chipset drivers let me know how it goes, I'll try to check in from work when I get the chance if there's any progress or if I have any other ideas.

How did you want me to replace the chipset driver? I don't know which of the 4 to uninstall in order to replace it?
There is a bunch of different chipset drivers under system devices (around 5)

Might be worth checking out http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?51240-Maximus-Hero-vii-network-adapter-not-working/page2. Other than that I officially admit defeat, no other ideas what it could be
