Overclocking a FX-8320e on Asus M5A97 R2.0 Motherboard only got a 4.0ghz overclock

Hey, so after two days of frustration I ended up getting a disappointing 4.0ghz at 1.33v I'm not even sure if it's a good temp:

I can't even get 4.2 without upping the vcore by quite abit and then getting some terrible temps and tons of crashing, my cooler is a Deepcool Maelstrom 120 Liquid Cooler +4 case fans, everything is seated properly. I'm using Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. I even upgraded to a Asus M5A97 R 2.0 from a M5A78L-M/USB3 just for atleast a 4.2ghz overclock. Should I keep the 4.0ghz is it stable enough/safe enough? Should I accept my silicon lottery loss? lol :( ...

Settings used:
Ai Overclock Tuner - Manual
AMD Turbo CORE Technology - Disabled
DRAM 1600Mhz @ 1.5v
CPU/NB Frequency - 2200Mhz
HT Link Speed - 2400Mhz
CPU & NB Voltage - Manual Mode
Cpu Manual Voltage: 1.33v
CPU/NB Manual Voltage - Set at 1.25v
CPU/NB LLC - Auto

Points :

1- Your cooler is weak , The maelstrom 120 is one of the weakest liquid coolers which has TDP of 140watt on AMD which equals to 4.0 Ghz on the 8 cores . the hyper 212 evo has 180watt TDP for comparison .
2- CPU temp (not cores temp) is too high It is the socket temp I guess so you are hitting it's limit (72c)
3- 1.33 is good voltage on the 8 cores , people go as high as 1.475 for 5.0 Ghz .
4-Could be your motherboard is hitting it's overclocking limit
I could be wrong but that is what I think of .

Sounds about right, 4+1 phase mobos don't take overclocking too well with those FX 8xxx CPU's. Fortunately I was able to OC my 8320E to 4.2GHz on a GA-970A-D3 (r3) but the mobo often got pretty hot but not boiling hot. I think at 4.2GHz it was reaching the 125W mark which is what the motherboard was rated at.

FX 83x0 CPUs are rated to operate normally at 72 degrees Celsius. 4 GHz, at 100% load, with 52 C is GREAT.

Up your Vcore some more, pump that CPU freq higher and just keep your tempt at a maximum of 72 C. You'll be fine.

I keep my FX 6300 at 4.5 Ghz using 1.28 Vcore and temperatures go to 80C in worst case scenarious. Usually it hovers at 70 though and I'm fine.

For FX 83x0 CPUs, it considered safe to keep the Vcore under 1.5V. Keep that Vcore lower and temperatures at max 72C and you'll be fine.

Mobo. 4+1 VRM= Don't O.C.

@Cryio, sorry don't mean to sound like a d!ck but,
72c is not recommended EVER, 62c is MAX . "Hovering" at 70c is not good, 80c is definitely not good. Very POOR advice, if not the worst I have seen in a long time.
Keep it 60ish or below @ max unless you want to replace it every year.
Not sure exactly what you're doing to your 6300, but my fx6300 has never hit 60c even once and is O.C. @ 4.54Ghz. It idles in the teens as well.

Back to the O.P. what kind of case fans setup do you have? And yes, that cooler isn't very good, Mobo not setup for O.C. Also, did you turn off turbo in your BIOS when O.C.'ing?

Hey thanks everyone, I think I'm going to pick up a Evo and try that out I think the current cooler I have, even if it is a liquid cooled unit it's most likely a not great one. Do you have any recommendations? I'd say below $90 http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?cPath=8 (I mostly get all my parts from here) I was thinking of getting a Coolermaster V8 GTG but I'm not sure maybe a Evo would be good?

I have overclocking a FX-6300 on that board, the model without heatsink over the mosfet vrm. I got to 4.4 GHz, with a 212 EVO-- without hitting thermal limit. Infact, after that I had to increase the voltage by a lot, to keep it stable, which I wasn't comfortable doing. Anyways, enough of my story. When you want to check temperatures, use AMD Overdrive, and look at the "thermal margin" for more accurate temperatures. Or run a stresstest, and wait for your PC to freeze, that's when you know you've reached 67C. I also suggest having a fan blow right ontop of your VRM, to help cool it, because as someone mentioned above, the power phase is quite weak. :)

As I've said, AMD FX CPUs are rated to operate under safe and normal conditions at up to 72C. Check around online to verify.

Another way to check is to have Hardware Monitor on the left of the screen and AMD Overdrive on the right. On a FX 6300, if Hardware monitor reports for example 60C, AMD Overdrive with report thermal margin 12C. Because FX 6300's upper safe limit is 72C . I hope I made myself clear.

Even though 72 is the safe limit, while gaming, occasionally my PC will ping me (I've set it in BIOS to buzz if it the CPU reaches 80+) when the CPU strucks 80C on occasion. But they're rare bursts. So overall, my CPU is operating pretty safe. I'm happy with it. Had it for 2 years now and I have no problems with it.
