I feel like the performance should be much better than this, any ideas on how to improve?

That motherboard has a number of different SATA connectors. It is possible you have it connected to a 3Gb SATA rather than a 6Gb. Check the motherboard manual. You want to be connected to SATA3_0 or SATA3_1 ports.
