Whenever I go to play a game on steam, the game lags even though my pc has pretty good specs. What should I do?

I recently built myself a new gaming pc. The specs are as follows:
Intel corei5-4670s
Nvidia Gtx 960 4gb gddr5
16 gb ddr3 ram
intel 100 gb ssd

Now, could it be my drivers aren't updated or installed? I forgot to install the motherboard drivers. Would it help to install them? I will be installing them anyway. And as a last note, I am using windows 10

Yes, many things could cause the problems, and drivers are a place to start, get the latest versions of each off the mobos web site, those that came on a disk w/ the mobo were prob outdated when you bought the mobo ;)

Are you talking low framerate or stuttering and dips? Also, what resolution?
