The video I'm looking at on YT (8gb vs 16gb ram gaming benchmarks) the one with the game in the background with the overlay of the benchmarks, shows no gain adding extra ram. Since I don't do video editing can anyone chime in on if there is a compelling reason to upgrade my system now? I'm afraid the stock of DDR3 2400 will be depleted and it's on sale now but I don't want to buy it for nothing if it will not make a difference in the lifetime of the RAM.

Solution
DDR4 gives no performance benefits in terms of gaming. So I wouldn't really be worried about the "lifetime" of the RAM. If you are talking about the literal life of it, the odds of it failing are extremely low so I wouldn't worry about that either. If you don't have anything running in the background of your computer (other than the supplimental things derp) then running 4GB would be fine too and you wouldn't need more.

So no, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, or doesn't matter. Anything more than 8 will do nothing. In the future, the same will likely be true for atleast 3 years. That being said, if you plan to keep that rig for more than 3 years, buy the kit. If not, then don't bother at all because your next rig is guaranteed to be DDR4.

Just my...

Just my two bits :)

(I actually did buy the extra 8GB since I was also worried about it not being available. But I am also unsure if I'm going to be video editing with this computer in the future. I am running Trident X) Another thing to think about is that you could actually (well likely) carry over that RAM to your next upgrade. Some motherboards will support Skylake as well as DDR3. But that would be kind of stupid considering DDR4 is out:)

This is a year old thread, back then 8GB was enought, in 2016 the games started demanding 16GB of ram
