I have an unused 500GB Seagate Momentus 2.5'' laptop SATA HDD and tried plugging it with SATA power connector on my PSU with the red SATA data cable but the system psu kinda makes reboot/shutdown sounds after BIOS post.

I'm able to see 500GB HDD detected in BIOS and set it to secondary but it still restarts or wont boot fully. Is my PSU just underpowered since if I unplug the 2.5" it boots normally with only my 3.5".

I also tried different SATA ports. Here's my config:

SATA 0 - 3.5" 80GB Maxtor
SATA 2 - 2.5" laptop drive SATA3 +5V

my PSU is AVF PS500-F1V2

~ ------ 4pin ----- SATA (2.5" here)
~ ------ 4pin ------ SATA (3.5" here) ------ 4pin Floppy
~ 4pin ATX power
~ 24 pin power

Pentium D 2.8
NVIDIA 9500 GT
2GB DDR2 667 Kingston
1 chassis fan used

Hey there, dfk.

I doubt that the PSU is underpowered in this case. I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different computer, to see if the same thing happens or try it with this one externally (via a SATA to USB adapter, a docking station or an external enclosure). If you get it to run, I'd suggest that you download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and test the drive to see if any errors or bad sectors pop-up.

Please let me know how everything goes.

I read another thread that a low power psu's InRush current could've caused it to shut down. I dont have an adapter to try on my laptop currently, but I tried swapping my 3.5" out and there was no problem booting with only the 2.5". I've just reformat it via windows 8.1 installation usb and OS also installed. However adding another disk would cause it to not boot up or even psu restarting. I will be changing the psu to a Seasonic soon too.
