To make things short, my motherboard died. I couldn't uninstall windows from that PC, I still have my windows 8.1 key and disk, will I be able to re use it when I swap my motherboard?

it depends you will probably have to ring microsoft and it will be up to there good will if they allow you to reactivate windows.
i managed this back when i had xp and it was an oem version. i just said i had a dead motherboard and i upgraded it. the guy on the other end said ok and gave me a new activation code... just be polite say please and thank you and you should be good.

If your replacement motherboard is the same, there should be no problem at all.

If the new motherboard is different, you may have a problem with activation if your 8.1 windows was oem.
You are likely then to need to do a phone activation and assure MS that this is a replacement and that this copy of windows is used nowhere else.

Just got in touch. They said I should be able to re use my windows 8 pro key. It was upgraded to 10 before it failed on me. No idea if it will actually activate, I will try it anyway ig

If it is OEM locked you probably won't be able to use it. If it isn't an OEM locked key/version of Windows you should be fine.
