Windows Vista Failing to Boot

Alright, this is my last resort. I have sunk over 80 hours into trying to get this computer working and finally after I got the networking functioning properly I encounter something worse, a failure to startup. Now, whenever I attempt to startup the computer it goes through everything normally until it is supposed to lead to choosing which user account to use but instead it just leads to a black screen with nothing but the mouse pointer and remains stuck there. I have been searching high and low and finally found something at least slightly promising which unfortunately required that I had the Vista installation disk which I don't. It said my other option was Microsoft's Diagnostics and Repair Toolset or "DaRT" which (after several hours of going in circles of attempting to figure out how to obtain or access the program) led me to find out that it requires some sort of absurdly expensive license. Is there ANYTHING else I can do? I mean, I could run a system restore to bring it back to factory defaults but I have files on the computer that I cannot afford to lose and I have no way to get them out short of taking out the Hard Drive and using my other computer to get them off of there. Is that what I am going to have to do? Or is there another way?

If you need a Vista disk to run a repair, you need to get a Vista disk.

Taking out the drive to copy files is quick especially since you already know you can do that, you will spend much less time doing that than trying other things.
