Hi!

Today I found an older hard drive to use as a backup to my sold state drive.
I decided to check to make sure nothing is left on the drive, so I plugged in a USB adapter into it and then the computer.
When opening disk management, it says I need to initialize the drive in either MBR or GBT

However it comes up with an error
"Drive not Ready"

In the small box it says the drive is offline and not initialized. When I right click to turn online , my only options are offline and help (initialize is grayed out)

How do I make the drive "online" and let me access it....I do not need anything on the drive, so if I need to wipe it etc some how that will do.

The adapter has been proven to work
And the drive worked before it was pulled from the system.

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8
Model number : ST3200826AS
Any help would be appreciated

Hey there, Hestand.

It sounds like the drive might have some other problems if you can't initialize it. I'd recommend that you try it with a different computer, to see if the same thing happens. You could also try using the HDD manufacturer's diagnostics tool, to low level format the drive (a.k.a. write zeros), to see if you'll be able to initialize it afterwards. You could also try scanning it for errors and/or bad sectors with the same tool, but I'm not sure it would be recognized if it's not initialized.

Hope that helps.
