Hi mate, this ptroblem is quite easy so solve:
Open dvd tray, turn off laptop, take out battery.
Now look for the DVD lens (its like a small drop of water).
With a Q-tip, and some tv cleaning solution (with no alcohol!) very, very gently clean the lens (barely touching it).
Let it dry for 5 minutes at least and it should work.
it reads some dvds but wont read my majority of cds even new ones what can i do?
Not all optical media drives have support for multi-layer disks, which may be the case here. It's possible to pinpoint the problem further, though to do so you'd need to tell me/us the make and model of the device.
Are you saying that a CD you had which could be read is now not being recognized? Are you sure the media isn't scratched? Again, what's the make/model? I need a little more information to be able to tackle the problem.
yes i use it to install games i have used it many times now but it wont read now and it the cd is not scratched and works as i tried it in my brothers desktop. also i tried with all my game cds and only some work it is also up to date
Is the firmware up-to-date? If it isn't, update it. Try restarting, making sure that the BIOS setting I recommended is saved. Then, try to reinstall the drivers. Restart again afterwards and tell me if it still has problems.
my firmware is up to date but when i went into the bios it had come back to default and i forgot to mention when i put the cd in it makes sound like its hitting something
If that's the case, then it's definitely a hardware problem. Does it make a skipping sound or is it more of a grinding sound? My best guess is that something is out of alignment, and provided such is the case you likely need to get the drive replaced. Hopefully the laptop is still under warranty.
