Buying a used power supply a good idea?

I have the option of buying a 5 year old and used Corsair VX550W power supply for 400 kroner (roughly 50$). Since the power supply is recommended by JonnyGuru , I think it must be a quality PSU. But I am not sure if it would be a good idea because it is 5 years used.

I also have the option of buying a new Cooler Master V550S 550 W which will cost me 586 kroners. (around $70-72). Another option would be OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W for 628 kroners and Corsair CX500 V2 500W for 650 kroners.

Which one should I buy? My graphic card will most likely by GTX 670 and the processor i7-3770s or an i5.

Thanks very much!

CM V550S 550W. Definitly.

Going for a 5 year old used PSU to save 20$, is NOT a good option....

and the V550S is top tier if i recall correctly, so that's the best option. Btw, rule nº1 on PC build:

DON'T SAVE UP ON THE POWER SUPPLY :D

specially when it's only 20$ lol

(and yes, 550W is enough juice for that build)

i wouldn't go for any of the options you listed... and definitely not the 5 years old one. see if you can get xfx 550w core edition since it's about in your budget and xfx is much better opton than cm, corsair, or the modxstream(whatever it is)

Not really bought anything yet but it is going to be either a new XFX core edition 550 or a new Cooler Master V550S. I will update you when I have chosen one.

XFX core edition is available here for 90 dollars while the CM one costs 70 dollars. Thanks for your help, I think I will go with the XFX.

Do you think when I make another computer build or upgrade this one in around 4-5 years time, will I have to invest in a new power supply or would I still be able to use the same one (assuming I buy XFX)?

It will depend on the components you will use, but most probably you will be able to use that PSU again on your next build.

But of course, if your next build is a very high tier one, that requests more power, then you will need another one.

Hi again,

I have just found another second hand power supply available for sale on a local website in Norway. This one is a Corsair HX850. The guy has used it for 2 years and it still has 5 years of warranty left. The guy is ready to give me the receipt. It is going to cost about the same price as a new XFX core edition 550W (± $5). Should I go for it instead?

I do not really need more than 550 W for my GTX 670 but getting a 850W should not cause any harm to my PC, should it? Also, it will allow for more upgrading opportunities in future, especially if switching to an AMD graphics card. What do you think? What should I go for? I am not planning to change anything about my pc for atleast 4 years though.

It just sounds like such a good deal. I do not know what to do.

Thanks for help!
