Hi Guys,

I'm planning on buying a desktop under $850 or Rs 50,000 (I live in India). I'll use the device for -

a. Moderately high gaming once or twice a week. (6 hours per session).
b. Lots and lots and lots of browsing and typing (I'm a content writer).

The budget includes
a. Processor
b. Motherboard
c. Graphics Card (low would do, I intend to save for a better one later)
d. Internal HDD (not SSD)
e. Optical Drive (I'm NOT downloading games on my 2Mbps)
f. PSU (650W)
g. Cabinet
h. Monitor

Point is I already have the peripherals so they can be discounted from the budget.
I've been suggested two processors -
AMD A10 7850K
AMD FX 8350

Arguments I've heard in favour of each are -

A10 7850K
a. Integrated Kaveri grade GPU (can forego dedicated GPU)
b. Newer
x. Heating ? My AMD A10 5750M heats like hell and is currently falling apart.

FX 8350
a. Faster and more powerful
x. No iGPU
x. Older and line probably hasn't been updated.
x. Costlier

I'm leaning towards A10 7850K but I'm scared about heating. I don't want to invest in liquid cooling yet and a egg boiler of a processor isn't exactly my dream.

The choice is vital because my processor would decide the motherboard (FM2+ or AM3+). Coming to the GPU -

a. AMD Radeon R7 250X
b. AMD Radeon R9 270

I'll probably go with a for now and save to go for b. Or would you guys suggest something else ?

The other part I'm wondering about is RAM. Choices seem to be -
a. Kingston FuryX 8GB
b. Corsair Vengeance 8GB

I've no idea which is better. Which would you suggest ?

Internal HDD and optical drive would probably be the first product I see on Amazon based on ratings :D Monitor too since I intend to game using HDMI and my fullHDTV.

Finally, cabinet ? Any suggestions whether I should go for mid size or full or what ?

To sum up, I need to know
a. Processor
b. Motherboard
c. Graphics Card
D.RAM
e. Cabinet

within my budget ?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions guys. I know you helped me when I bought the Lenovo G505S a year and half back so I know I can count on you.

Cheers,
Ari

PS - I heard Intel and nVidia are pricier and not necessarily better. Anyone can convince me otherwise ?

I suggest the R9 270X from MSI, it's a fairly cheap card, and so far I can run every game I got with it myself, would be a good option if you still plan on upgrading.
The 8350 is quite a good processor, but I don't think you will benefit (yet) over the extra cores so maybe go for the 6300.
As a PSU I'd search for a good 600W+ PSU, that's all you are gonna need, I myself have a PSU from Cooler Master, which is great.
For RAM you could put in one stick of 8gb, but I just suggest you get 2 sticks of 4gb, it's the usual thing to do. I'd suggest getting a pair of Corsair Vengeance.

The motherboard you buy is all decided by what processor you take, so if you were to go for either the 8350 or 6300, then you'll need a motherboard with an AM3+...

ScrewySqrl - Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately the Athlon 860K isn't available in India and since processors are so fragile I am not confident about importing it.

Would the FX 6300 be a good alternative ? I figured that I can bring the difference between a A10 7850K+R7 250 and FX 6300+R9 270 to around $35 which is tolerable. Would I get better gaming performance and overall performance with the FX 6300 or would 7850K be better ?

Or would you suggest a different combination ?

Anyhow I need the CPU+GPU combination to be around $350-400. I'm more than willing to choose a cheaper motherboard to accommodate the price increase of this combination.

r u focussed on a AMD build alone? Or open to intel build as well. there can be good savings (in power bills) with an intel build for the same configuration

these days, imo amd is used only for raw power such as virtualization, video, etc.

Half Life - I'm open to Intel builds as well. This would be the first PC I'd assemble for myself so there's no point being dogmatic about AMD. :D The reason I went for AMD is because I've been told Intel/nVidia is costlier than AMD and AMD tends to work better with AMD (GPU).

But as I said, I don't want to be dogmatic. If Intel provides power savings why not ? I'm not very familiar with the i5 range, could you give some suggestions ? And should I stick with AMD GPU or think NVidia ?

ok, so here is my two cents. This build is aimed at high energy efficiency while still meeting the usage needs.

08,000 CPU: intel i3 4130
06,000 Board: B85 model from Asus/Asrock/Gigabyte/MSI
06,000 RAM: 2X4 GB 1600 MHz C9 from Corsair/Gskill
12,000 GPU: Nvidia GTX 750 TI from Asus/Gigabyte/MSI (pick the non-OC model)
08,000 Monitor: 22" full HD model from Dell/BenQ/Asus/AOC
06,000 CM cabinet (2,000) with addl fans (500), and Corsair 430 SMPS (2,500), and DVD Drive (1,000)
04,000 HDD: Seagate 3.5" 7200 RPM internal 1 TB
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
50,000 Half life's high efficiency build
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes
- For CPU, I picked i3 because it has the lowest energy footprint for your needs, what the fx6300 does for 95 watts, this one does it for 50; if you have funds left over, i'd recommend an i5
- For GPU, I picked Nvidia just because of the maxwell architecture (energy efficiency); what R7 370 does with 110 watts, 750 TI does with 60
- For monitor, I picked 22" but if you have funds left over, you can pick a 24" full hd model
- I did not include UPS, but for India i think it is required

You will notice that I have not mentioned specific models but just left references to vendors, that is becuase the quality is reasonable these days with most manufacturers. i would suggest you shop in stores rather than online.

Half Life - Thanks a million for providing a detailed listing and the equally detailed explanations and on my part, sorry for the late reply. I'm a newbie when it comes to pretty much everything related to hardware so here are some questions if you don't mind -

a. Would the above rig be able to churn out performance roughly equal to the FX 6300 or 8320 ? I'm asking because of the price points.
b. I also saw a GTX 660 roaming about. I'm sure the 750 Ti is better but could you tell me how the 660 compares to the 750 Ti ?
c. You've suggested two RAM sticks. Why not go for one RAM stick of 8 gigs ? Is there any benefit to getting two ?
d. I really don't need a 22" display since I intend to game mostly using my TV (HDMI cable). I'd go for something basic like 15.6" or 18". I presume the cost would come down to around 5,000 then ? Where can the 3,000 left over be invested ?
e. Would a 430W PSU suffice ? I mean there are PSUs going up to 650W so would 430W be sufficient ?
f. Any UPS suggestions ?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions. Having been fed a lot of pro-AMD stuff I'm just coming around to the Intel benefits. That's why I have perhaps more questions than the average person would.

Thanks again for the awesome reply and thanks in advance for your answers!

a) the 6300; for comparision ith 8320, u will need i5 4460
b) below is a link that compares the two, but in all sincerety, for a single monitor full hd gaming, u don't need any more than the 750 ti http://www.hwcompare.com/17301/geforce-gtx-660-vs-geforce-gtx-750-ti/
c) there is this thing called dual-channel architecture that when using 2 sticks, benefits from marginal increase in read write operations to RAM; u can also buy one stick no problem
d) processor processor processor i5 4440/4460
e) for my build, yes; there are psus for over 1500w as well, but your build will determine your wattage needs; here is a url that can help you with it http://www.coolermaster.outervision.com/
f) any double-battery ups will do (luminous/APC seem like the only good ones)

As a cabinet I'd just go for a mid size one, because you're not gonna need anything bigger if you put all of the above in.

If you were to buy this you'd probably end up at about $700 and you might want to spend a little extra, because you don't want to get stuck with a cheap PSU for instance, because it might not seem to make a difference, but if your PC doesn't get enough power, it won't even start up.
