Hi, my house had power outage yesterday and then it went back up.
However, I couldn't turn on my other computer (my main is fine). I switched the PSU (raidmax) with a backup crappy PSU and it went up again.

Did it kill my raidmax? I bought it on Oct/2014 from newegg.
How do I prevent this?

Thanks.

PSU was: RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX530SS - 530W
(Newegg# N82E16817152028)

The fact that you have a crappier PSU than a RAIDMAX lying around is a scary thought.

Push comes to shove, a UPS is always a good idea. The trick is balancing the practicality and price with actual need. Would you have had your backup plugged into said UPS?

First, looking at the Power Supply Tier List -- http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html Raidmax doesn't have a good reputation. See this thread also -- http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/347689-28-raidmax-quality-power-supply-brand

Get a Tier 1 or Tier 2 from the power supply list and you won't have problems like this. Also look at the articles on power strips. The quality of a surge suppressor also varies. The power supply is the last place you want to cheap out ...

I've only used a Raidmax as an emergency PSU to get the data backed up off an old P4 system that was my home file server. They simply are built down to a cost and it shows. I wouldn't be shocked if someone tested one and found it did not pass most of the ATX standards for power output.

(D'oh! Had an informative message all typed out, when to post, but had to sign on, then posted again, but it didn't have my response.)

Quality PSU behind a good UPS to catch the spikes, overvoltages and undervoltages, and give time to cleanly turn the PC off when the power fails.

Question 1:
This one is under "Tier Two" but it's 380W and $47.44 -- is this correct to be in tier 2?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N82842561&cm_re=antec_earthwatts-_-17-371-033-_-Product
(Newegg# N82E16817371033)

Question 2:
Is this "Tier Three"?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
EVGA 500W

Question 3:
EVGA 500W 80+
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
$43

or

SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze 520W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151094
$55
?

Or just tell me which is cheapest in tier 2? Tier 1?
I did a quick research and found "EVGA Supernova GS" (Tier One) is $96 (newegg).
For Tier 2, it's SeaSonic S12-II for $55 (also newegg)

Thanks much!

Regarding the Antec:

Probably because it is well constructed and uses all Japanese caps, and actually produces close to what it claims to. What may drop it to tier two might be some issues with hold-up time, voltage ripple, spikes on startup, or using all 18ga wiring (Which is in spec, but high draws on a 12v line can heat up thinner wires), or that a lot more of it's output is on the lower voltages that don't see as much use as they did in the past.

When we say don't 'cheap out' on the PSU, we mean not to choose power supplies with inferior hardware and inflated specs that are sold cheap yet make a crazy % of profit per unit.

A low to mid power PSU with good guts is entirely possible to find for low cost, but it just isn't making the same levels of profit for the manufacturer per unit, with the aim of making more profit in the numbers sold.

Well I bought that Raidmax because of the high rating on newegg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152028
1296 reviews averaged 4 out of 5 stars (bought it for around $40 at that time)
So why is this thing bad (tier four)?

I need to find source of truth.

Edit:
So I bought the EVGA 500 W. According to jonnyguru's review ( http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=384 ) This one scored high (8.1) and for $47 after tax, that's awesome.
Thoughts?

Edit:
Wow, the SeaSonic S12ii 520 gets a very high rating from jonnyguru ( http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story5&reid=185 ) of 9.7 average. For $55 right now on newegg, this is probably better deal than EVGA. Probably will buy that for my other computer or as a backup. Thoughts?
