I'm currently using a LGA 775 motherboard, but I want to start getting into more modern cpus (preferably an i7). I'd like it to at least support ddr3 ram, but other than that I don't really care.

I'm not looking to buy an i7 with it, I can always buy that later on as I plan to get the parts over time. My budget for the motherboard I guess would be like $100 (which can be changed, I don't know much about motherboard prices) . I don't really care if it's new or not, as long as it's in decent condition.

Of course, but I don't plan to install the motherboard right away, since I already have a working computer. I'm getting this motherboard so that I have the opportunity to get a processor, but I don't plan to right away. I can look for a processor after I get the motherboard by myself. I'm not sure if I even plan to get an i7 at first either, I might go with an i3 or i5. I'm aware that I need to get the same socket processor as the motherboard, but that's not really important for choosing the motherboard if I don't have a certain model of processor in mind, does it?

I would not buy anything until you're ready to buy everything. Put it to you like this, when you buy the motherboard without a CPU, RAM or PSU, how do you know you didn't receive a bad one? How do you test the motherboard? You can't because you don't have all the parts. And the 30 return policy is from the time of purchase. After that you'd have to deal with the manufacturer for a return.

Also, I'm going to disagree with you on the fact that the motherboard doesn't matter if you don't have a CPU in mind. They go hand in hand. Do you want to overclock? If you don't, the CPU/motherboard combo could be a non K (example i5 4590) and a H97 board. If you want to overclock, than the combo would be a Z97 and an Intel K (example 4960k). That option alone will add cost to the build.

What the timeline for the purchases? The longer you wait the less I would say H97 paired with a Haswell CPU. If you said Christmas, I may say Z170 and Skylake CPU if the budget permits.

Things to consider.
