I am having trouble getting into my external hard drive. I use it mainly for movies, and photos. But recently it hasn't let me access it when I connect it to my laptop. It keep saying "F: is not accessable". It's never done that before. Any idea what could be the problem??

Solution
Try it in another computer, if that does not work try a different USB cable, if that does not work you can try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it in another enclosure. Some drives may not work that way though as they have a custom connection on it, not just a regular SATA hard drive connector, depends on the brand and model.

Hey there, duanedustyn2116!

Besides all the troubleshooting steps that @hang-the-9 mentioned, you can also try taking ownership of your external drive. I believe I found a tutorial from MS that could be useful to you with some guidelines on how to take ownership of a file/folder in Win XP: http://support2.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&Product=winxp

It might also be a good idea to test your external HDD using the manufacturer's diagnostic tool from their website, as it will help you determine the health and SMART data status of the drive. If you are unable to find such a utility, you can refer to this thread from the community: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Hope it helps. Keep us posted! :)
