Hi I am about to purchase a 980 ti and wandering monitor would be best to use for it. I am currently coming from gaming at 1080p 60hz and I am a casual gamer on rpg games, strategy and the occasional fps.

My options are:

1080p @ 144hz monitor

1440p @ 60hz budget doesn't allow me to go 144hz

Or 4k @ 60hz with gsync.

Thanks.

I'm also on 1440p and there is a rather huge difference, personally, I'd probably prefer 1440p, also because windows tends to scale a lot better here than on 4k.

Following because I'd like to know what people say.

And like to know why you just don't pick a res and monitor and ask if it's worth anything.

Also, the 980ti won't pull 4K at max settings in some games.

I wouldn't go 4k on a single 980 ti. If you want stable 60fps frames on max settings, personally i don't think theirs a huge difference between 1080p and 1440p i'd personally jump from 1080p to 2k @60hz. But thats just me. Maybe go 1080p@144hz i do reach around 80fps maxed out on my current i7 870 so i expect at least aroudn 100fps when my 6600k comes, in bf4. So yeah the 144hz should show a significant frame rate improvement. What system specs are you running cpu wise?

For that kind of gaming i would recommend a 1440p 60Hz monitor.
4k is just too much for the current hardware even high end stuff like the 980ti (if you aim for 60 fps)
Im using a 1440p 60Hz screen myself and like it alot. Much higher resolution which looks great especially in RPGs but still managable with current hardware. :)

Btw im using a Dell u2711

Has great colours and there are newer modells in this product lineup.

Do you know what 1440p is? Its 2.5k

Amount of pixels:
1080p: 2,073,600
1440p: 3,686,400

its a considerable increase in resolution.

If you have the desk space, I can personally recommend the Phillips 40" BDM4065uc.
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-BDM4065UC-Resolution-Speakers-DisplayPort/dp/B00SCX78JS

Smaller 4k monitors result in a native text size that is small and hard to read.

I run 60fps with full chroma on civ 5 and other similar games using a GTX980ti.

If you want smaller, a 1600P 30" ips monitor will give you nice quality and a lot of detail.

My bad, I was thinking of 2k as in 2000p-2160p which is ironically 4k, i really hate the naming for these resolutions yet 4320p is 8k. Another thing 1080p is called full hd, and 1440p is quad hd. but both 4k and 8k are considered just uhd?

Do be careful about using TV's as a 4k monitor.
To get 60hz, and full chroma you need displayport or hdmi 2.0 input on the tv.
One might be satisfied with lesser color, but not with 30hz.
Check the reviews carefully.
The Phillips I linked is $800 and has been reviewed extensively.

Resolution -> minimum monitor dimension
1080p -> 24''
2k -> 27''

Now to the points regarding the 144Hz:
1- The dimensions are gonna depend on the distance you will be to the monitor. choose first on that.
2- No one, BUT NO ONE, is going to be able to tell you if 144Hz will be good for you. My option was to go to my local store, order a 144Hz monitor, having the option to return it in 15 days time. So basically, I had 15 days to try out the monitor. With Amazon you have 30 days to try out anything like this.
3- After trying out, decide based on experience. 3 of my friends and my girlfriend didn't notice difference, 2 other friends did notice the difference. Depends from one to another.

btw, i wouldn't go for 4K. 4K is aimed at huge monitors (aka televisions), or working sets for things like autocad and photosop (professional stuff, not refering to home use).
