Can I play Assassin's Creed Unity on my Laptop?

I have a really hard time playing it on my gtx 980 (30ish fps). but I have it maxed out, you might get away with it at the lowest settings. or maybe medium setting with no AA, I don't know, your gonna have to try it for yourself or find some benchmarks

I doubt it sorry to say maybe on a really low resolution on low settings, unity is an unoptimized mess of a game so that makes me think the game will be pretty much unplayble on your labtop, you are quite a bit below the minimum requirements for unity.

Well if you dont happen to have a decent gaming pc lying around then yes you are better of with a console than that laptop for gaming.
As long as you do the upgrade yes it should preserve all your programs and files. It would be best if you backed up anything important before you do the upgrade in case the upgrade fails or something.
